摘要:The global village is now becoming smaller and smaller, and people on the earth long for knowing more about each other’s culture. Concededly, literary translation is the most widely accepted means to promote cultural communication between the East and the West.
sp;2.1 The Significance of Literary Translation
As the world evolves into a global village today, the importance of cross-cultural exchange takes on added urgency. With modern means of communication and transportation, today’s international contacts are going on an unprecedented vast scale and people can now board a plane and fly anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. Additionally, the emergence of information superhighway and Internet brings people worldwide closer and closer. Given this reality of global interconnectedness and interdependence, no country, as long as it seeks for a place in the world stage and a fast development, can afford to insolate itself from cultural exchange with the rest of the world. Translation occurring between two languages cannot be done or studied without regard of its cultural context. Literary works which load so much cultural information, however, they draw more and more attention from many translators as well as many readers. And literary translation is considered not only as the exchange between two languages but also as the exchange between two cultures. As for literary translation, its purpose is to introduce some excellent foreign literary works to the target language readers and make cultures in the different nations communicate and link up with each other.
2.2 The Barriers of Literary Translation
As everyone knows that literary translation is more difficult than non-literary translation. Cultural differences are the biggist part of this. And cultural differences bear strong characteristics, thus how to deal with the differences in cultural elements becomes a key to achieve successful transmission in literary translation. In literary translation, cultural differences often cause misreading, loss and distortion of meanings. And there are several causes:different historical backgrounds, different geographic positions, different religious beliefs, different thinking patterns. Getting the origins, it will be easier to solve the problems in literary translation.
2.3 The Criteria of Literary Translation
Literary translation has its own nature which is entitled as “literariness” by means of artistic usage of languange. And it also transfers a sort of aesthetic messages that offer readers a sense of beauty apart from the general messages. The more aesthetic messages a literary work contains, the more wonderful it is. Generally speaking, literary translation can be done at three different levels---the linguistic level, the literary level and the cultural level. The lingusitic level is the most superficial one, at which linguistic problems are focused mainly. The literary level puts emphasis on the transformation of aesthetic values and pays much attention to the conveyance of beauty and spirit of the original text into the target context, in which the physical images and the virtual images reinforce and different feelings and settings are blended. The cultural level is the deepest and highest level among the three.
Ⅲ. The Origin of Cultrual Difference Involved in Literary Translation
Eugene A.Nida held that: For truly successful translating, biculturalism is even more important than bilingualism, since words only have meanings in terms of the cultures in which they function. He classified cultural differences as ecological culture, linguistic culture, religious culture , material cult
