II. Analysis of Chinese Dish Names in Terms of Their Cultural Constituents 中国菜名的文化要素条款分析
China is very different from Western countries in terms of art and thought patterns. The Chinese always focus on artistic conception while the Western people seek facts. This kind of diversity makes Chinese culture very different from that of Western countries. In terms of cuisine culture, the diversity also leads to the differences between Chinese dish names and Western dish names.
III. Characteristics of the Translation of Chinese Dish Names and Its Requirements for Translators 中国菜名翻译的要求及特征
Since Chinese dish names have so many cultural elements and a wide diversity with Western dish names, their translation have been attached special characteristics and thus some requirements arise for translators.
A. Characteristics of the translation of Chinese dish names
First, the translation should clearly state the raw materials of the dish. The Westerners emphasize that the translation of Chinese dish names had better show the realities. An interview was conducted with an American lady who has lived in China for several years. The lady was asked to express her opinion about the English translations of Chinese dish names in the appendix table. She suggested the translations should be direct and clear to show what foreigners want to know. With regard to the differences between the translations in mainland China and Western countries, she thought that in Western countries the translations are more related to the things in the food, which are different from the translations done in China (Cong 1). Based on her words, translators can have an idea of what is more important for foreigners in the translation of Chinese dish names. The foreigners want to know clearly what they are eating. This is why overseas restaurants have the menus with clear information. For this reason some translators suggest that translating Chinese dish names into English should provide adequate information first. At least the materials and methods used for cooking the dish must be clearly stated in the names of the dishes. This is an important characteristic of the translation of dish names.
V. Conclusion 结论
China is a country with a long history and possesses a variety of cuisine with distinct features. Chinese cuisine is regarded as a great wonder of collection of looks, designs delicious aroma and taste in foreign people’s eyes. The translation of Chinese dish names provides a window for foreigners to gain deeper insight into Chinese culture. Therefore an acceptable translation of Chinese dish names seems to be of great value.
Based on Chinese cuisine culture, cultural translation theory and characteristics of Chinese menu translation, this thesis conducts a study on the methods of translating Chinese dish names from a cultural aspect. It covers the analysis of Chinese dish names in terms of their cultural constituents, the characteristics of the translation of Chinese dish names and its requirements for translators and the methods of translating Chinese dish names. There are mainly six translating methods. Different techniques are suggested to be employed to translate different dish names. The translation strategies suitable for one particular kind of dish may not be applicable to others, so the strategies should be adjusted according to
