The Pronunciation and Stress of Blend Words. One of the difficulties in learning English blend words lies in their pronunciation and stress. So far as I know, there is a lack of discussion on this problem. The follow-ing may indicate something about my first survey in several cases:
(1) A monosyllabic blend contains certain vowel and consonants of the source words. Its pronunciation is forined by the new syllable of the new word. Take the blends smog and sinaze for instance. The blend smog lsmaglcomes from smokelsniaukland foglfagl; the blend smazelsmeizlconies frorn smoke and hazelheizl.
(2) The pronunciation of two-syllable or polysyllabic blends is com-posed of the remained sounds of the source words. Generally speaking, the remained syllables and stress of the source words are also the syllables and stress of the new word. For example: cablegramlk'eiblgrrernl (froni cable /'keibl land telegram l'teligreeml) ' sportscast ls,pa: tska: stl (frorn
sportslspa : tsland broadcastlb,ro : dka : s tl) , slumlordls, 1^m la: dl (from sluin lslnmland landlordl, lee ndlo : dl) , snoopervisels' nu : pavaizl (from snooplsnu :pland supervisels'ju:pavaizl) , etc. From these examples we see that the pronunciation of these blends is formed by the remained syllables of the source words. Part of the pronunciation of the blend is the very pronun-ciation of one of the source words, and the stress of this source word be comes the stress of the new word.
(3) If the accented syllables of the two source words all remain in the blend, we have to decide which syllable should take the primary stress.
As a rule, the stress of the iiiain source word should be the stress of the new word- For instance, the blend boatellbau, tellcomes frorri boatl'baatl and hotellhau'tell. Its stress falls on the second syllable which is the accented syllable of hotel. This is because boat as the first elenient of the blend specifies or qualifies the second element which comes from ho-
tel. Boatel is still a kind of hotels, but a special one having docks to accommodate people traveling by boat.Another example is the blend Am-erindianleema'rindjanl, which is composed of Americanla'trlerikanjand In-dianl'indjanl. The stress of the blend is the stressed syllable of indian which is the nucleus among the two source words. This blend still means a kind of indians, but a particular kind of indians in America. In this blend, Indian is the center of the new conveyance, whereas Ainerican ser-ves as a modifier. It is the same with the blend word radiotricianlreidi-au'triJanjwhich takes the stress of the main source word electrician. So in this kind of blends the stress of the inain source word reinains the pri-mary stress while the stress of the qualifier is reduced to the secondary stress. More exarnples are cineinactor, cinemactress, multiversity,.Syncon, quackpuncture, etc.
(4) Some blends have two stresses which are the stressed syllables of the two source words.Examples:sci-fil,sai,fail( science and ficti=on) , hi-fil,hai,fail (from high and fidelity) ' masscultl, mees, knltl (from iiiass and cluture), etc. This shows that the two elements of the blend sh-are equal importance in making new sense. Take sci-fi for example. It is difficult to tell which qualifies which. It is sciense and fiction at t
