The Shandong Art Museum has long been an important window for the cultural andartistic endeavors of Shandong Province,attracting a large number of audiences,includinginternational tourists.From 6th August to 20th September of 2023,the landscapeexhibition“Landscape·Era·Viewing-Research Exhibition on Landscape Ink Paintings(1951-2022)”was held in the Shandong Art Museum,which drew a lot of people who areinterested in Chinese traditional art.The exhibition was distributed in three different halls:“Landscape·Study”,“Landscape·Society”and“Landscape·World”.The interpretervisited the Exhibition with her friends on 29th August and was impressed by the paintingsans the stories carried with them.

The news of the exhibition also reached some international students of ShandongUniversity of Finance and Economics.On September 2,2023,Sayham Sabbir Hadi,aninternational student from Bangladesh,majoring in Economics and Trade of the Universityasked the interpreter to go to the exhibition with him,providing Chinese-Englishconsecutive interpreting for him,and the interpreting process lasted about 90 minutes.

1.2 Entruster’s Requirements

Knowing the client’s requirements before interpreting plays a crucial role in theprocess of interpreting and it also could help the interpreter meet the client’s needs moreefficiently.

Sayham’s requirements are mainly summarized as follows:

Firstly,Sayham expected to gain a general idea of the paintings and some of thedrawing technniques if possible.He hoped that the interpreter could convey the docent’smain idea without omitting crucial information or causing misunderstandings.Althoughhaving the experience of visiting Chinese landscape paintings,Sayham doesn’t know verywell the meaning of some techniques,the styles and content of landscape paintings clearly.

Besides,Sayham wanted to know some historical events,cultural traditions,andartistic styles related to the paintings,and in this way he could understand more aboutChinese culture and history.He hoped that the interpreter could provide some informationor related stories of the paintings in an easy-to-understand way.

Lastly,Sayham looked forward to having good communication and interaction withthe interpreter during the interpretation process.

2.1 Pre-Interpreting Preparations
