2.1.1 Foreign Studies on Subtitle Translation

The origin of movies can be traced back to Paris,France.Arrival of a Train at La Ciotatmarked the birth of film.Due to the longer history of film in the Western world,itstheoretical research has also been more advanced in the West.In overseas studies,conceptslike screen translation,audiovisual translation(AVT),and multiMedia translation allencompass the concept of subtitle translation.

Jan Ivarsson,a Swedish subtitle translator,was one of the earliest scholars in Europe tosystematically study subtitle translation.His work Subtitling for the Media:A Handbook ofan Art(1992)was the first comprehensive study of subtitle translation.In this book,heproposed some basic principles and techniques for subtitle translation.For example,subtitlesshould strive to be faithful to the original text while considering the cultural background andreceptive abilities of the target audience.Subtitles should be concise and clear,avoidingoverly long or complex sentences.Subtitles should harmonize with visuals and sound,avoiding obstruction of important visual information or conflicts with audio.

2.2 Studies on Eco-translatology

Eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen is an interdisciplinary study.This emerging theory has provided inspiration for many scholars.At the same time,it hasinjected new vitality into translation theory.In this section,the author will elaborate on theprevious research on Eco-translatology in both Western countries and China.

2.2.1 Foreign Studies on Eco-translatology

Before Eco-translatology was formally proposed in China,a great many experts andscholars in the international translation community used various ecological views such as“adaptation”,“selection”,“ecology”,“eco-environment”,and“balance”to explaintranslation activities.For example,Newmark(1988)identified five types of culturalinterventions during translation,with the first being ecological characteristics.RosannaWarren(1989)viewed translation as a form of cognitive survival,likening it to the migrationof plants and animals that require adaptation to new environments.Andre Lefevere,arenowned translator,referred to the“cultural environment”to describe the translationcontext and compared translation research to exploring and describing the growth of plants.David Katan(1999)discussed the cultural aspects of the translation process,includingnatural,political,climatic,spatial,and temporal environments.Nida(2000)emphasizedtranslators’decisions involving selection,target audience,and edition.Additionally,MichaelCronin(2012)highlighted the“linguistic ecology of translation”in his discussion oftranslation and globalization.
