Chapter One Wonders and Revelry: Musical Performance and Display of Power

1.1 Dionysian Undercurrents in the Performance of Seven Deadly Sins

“A sound Magician is a mighty God” (1.61) This statement seems to establish the importance of sound effects in Faustus. Even though the word “sound” means good, this sentence is taken as “An outstanding magician is like an almighty God,” which is more authoritative and fits the theme of the play better, but we may be able to interpret this word from a different angle like Katherine Steele Brokaw, who uses the perspective of music to interpret Faustus’s Magic as audible spells and provides an in-depth explanation of the relationship between magic and music.

Schopenhauer once said that music is the highest expression of art. He contends that the profound influence of music on individuals stems from its direct representation of the fundamental essence of human experience, namely, the will. In the realm of theatre, music plays an essential role as a potent emotional catalyst that elevates the entire theatrical experience. Its capacity to evoke feelings, set the mood, and propel the narrative forward positions it as a fundamental element. In addition to Schopenhauer, Nietzsche also mentioned the importance of music in his theory of tragedy.

1.2 Spectacle of Feasting and Drinking

Dionysus was a revered ancient Greek god of wine and revelry, famous for his feasts and celebrations. Therefore, another important feature of Dionysian Spirit, as the name suggests, is wine.

Dionysus’s most significant attribute, for which he had been recognized since time immemorial, is his status as inventor and patron of wine, an omnipresent beverage in ancient life, giving rise to one of the most important and long-lasting Greek celebrations: the symposion, when, gathered in a place surrounded by music and poetry, the participants rendered praise to the god and profusely consumed the beverage created by him. (Silva 10)

During the Renaissance, drinking could take place in many settings. For example, nobles and aristocrats often held private banquets and feasts in their grand residences. These gatherings were elaborate affairs, featuring luxurious settings, fine tableware, and an abundance of food and drink. Banquets were not only occasions for dining but also for displaying wealth and social status. they normally had access to a wide range of high-quality wines and spirits. Exotic and rare beverages were imported to satisfy the tastes of the elite.

Chapter Two Transcendent Word: Language and Transformation

2.1 Seductive Art of Oratory

The significance of Faustus’s speeches in Marlowe’s play lie in their multifaceted role as a narrative device, a window into Faustus’s character, and a thematic vehicle. Marlowe uses a rich vocabulary, characterized by extreme or hyperbolic language, which carries the reader or audience into an imaginary world filled out with references to myth and to the limits of geographical knowledge.

The poetic imagery employed by Faustus serves as a vehicle for conve论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
