The author majors in MTI and spends her spare time translating to improve hertranslation skills and enrich her practice experiences. Then a classmate in MTI finds abiography entitled The Art Thief:A True Story of Love,Crime and a Dangerous Obsession(hereinafter referred to as The Art Thief)from Amazon. It was published in June,2023from Simon&Schuster Inc.and without a Chinese version. She invites the author of thisreport to collaborate with her on the translation of The Art Thief in July. The author skimsthe biography and finds it’s well-written,mainly describing the thrilling theft experience ofStéphane Breitwieser.Out of curiosity, she looks for information of Stéphane Breitwieser. He is a French art thief and steals over 300 artworks just for appreciation instead of formoney, which arouses the interest of the author of the report. This also makes the author ofthe report more interested in the translation. Therefore she agrees to cotranslate The ArtThief with her classmate.

Then they discuss how to divide up the task. The Art Thief is a biography with 38chapters,totaling 53800 words. They divide this book into two parts, the former 15chapters as the first part and Chapters 16-32 as the second. The author is responsible fortranslating the second part, from Chapter 16 to Chapter 32,about 26000 words.Thistranslation report is based on a portion of this task of about 13000 words, from Chapter 16to Chapter 26 as the source text. The translation project ran from July 20 to September 30.They started the translation from July 20 and finished the first draft on August 20.Andthey finished proofreading and modification on September 30.

1.2 Introduction to the Source Text

In this section, the author will provide an overview of the original author of The Art Thief and summarize the main content of Chapters 16-26.Additionally,there will be adiscussion on the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text.

The Art Thief is written by Michael Finkel,an American writer and journalist. He haspublished four books so far.In 2017,his novel entitled The Stranger in the Woods waspublished and became a bestseller that year.In 2011,Michael Finkel was fascinated by thefantastic life experience of the French art thief Stéphane Breitwieser. There are threereasons motivating him to write this book.First, there is the sheer volume of hiscrimes—Breitwieser stole from more than 200 museums and galleries in the 1990s andearly 2000s,probably more places than anyone else in history.Second,he never resorted toviolence. His thefts were all day-to-day transactions with sophisticated stealth.Third, hestole artworks attracting him the most but not the most valuable, and put them in attics forcollection not for money, which made him so different from other thieves. These madeMichael Finkel so interested in writing about Breitwieser’s life experience that Finkelwrote letters to Breitwieser to express his desire to interview him.Through interviewinghim,Finkel learns more about his experience and accumulates enough source material tostart writing this biography.
