摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文以《英语文摘》(2012-2015)中 18 篇与岛屿争端相关汉译新闻为研究对象,通过与被并置一起的英语新闻进行对比,以及对夹注、脚注、导读、以及配图的考察,以期找到译者重新建构源语新闻叙事的蛛丝马迹以及这份重构背后的动因。
Chapter 1 Introduction
April of 2012 was doomed to be a tumultuous time for China. A maritime stand-off took place between Chinese maritime authority vessels and Philippine Navy and Coast Guard ships after a Chinese fishing boat drove into Huanyan Island. Hot on the Philippines’ heels, Ishihara Sintaro, governor of Tokyo, put up a “nationalization” scheme for Diaoyu Island, “buying” the island from a Japanese “owner”. The blatant actions of territorial infringement overwhelm Chinese people with huge outrage up and down the country. These international incidents almost become a topic, a theme, Chinese people cannot bypass, or are unwilling to avoid. How Chinese translators, particularly those who deal with the translation of English news would act and respond to in the vortex of island conflicts looms large in translation studies. For example, when the original text writes down “senkakusu”, rather than Diaoyu Island, if the translator translates it by letter, then he/she is a faithful translator but might not be a qualified Chinese person, if the translator turns it into “Diaoyu Island”, then he/she is in the danger of being called an irresponsible translator especially if the original text is plainly alongside with the translation. Putting the original news and its translation in a single text may be a splendid way for English-learning, though it would surely throw the tension and challenges faced by translators into a spotlight, particularly when it comes to contemporary political conflicts.
1.1 Research background
Ever since the birth of Translation Studies, it has been seemingly geared towards taking literary pieces or their
history as its research object.In as early as 19th century, Schleiermacher, the great philosopher, theologian, and above all, linguist, made his views felt by saying that the real translation encompasses only literary and natural sciences’ works and the rest translation are mechanical and practical. (Schleiermacher, cited in Tan Zaixi, 2004/2013:107) According to his understanding, political news translations would definitely not be seen as a real translation and thus not worth of a research eye.
