ion of a person or group of people in a particular situation. Therefore, different people in the society use different euphemism for communication. In this thesis, we introduce three pairs of roles’ relationship: equal and unequal, distant and intimate, formal and informal. People in communication have different social positions in unequal roles’ relationship and have some similar social positions in equal roles’ relationship. In distant roles’ relationship, the psychological distance is long. In intimate roles’ relationship, the psychological distance is short. In formal roles’ relationship, the social relationship of people in communication is formal and serious, while in informal roles’ relationship; the social relationship of people in communication is informal. Then, we analyze the reasons of using euphemism from psychological factors and politeness principle in three pair of the roles’ relationship. The psychological factors include the sense of shame, pursuing good fortune and avoiding disaster, avoiding irritating the others, the feeling of anxiety, the feeling of shyness and timidity, group habit, distance creates beauty. The way of using euphemism is also very important for people to communicate. We analyze the way of using euphemism from speech act: locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. In order to achieve the best communication effects, different people take different way of using euphemism to communication and let others know their real meaning. In a word, according to psychological factors, politeness principle, and speech act, we can know the reason why people use euphemism in three pairs of roles’ relation and the way that people use euphemism to achieve their aims.
