关键词:languagecommunicationrelationshipThe definition of “role”Three pairs of roles’ relationship
he roles’ relationship between Strasser and Rick is equal, distant, and formal. The roles’ relationship between Rick and Renault is equal, intimate, and informal. Rick uses “I am a drunkard” to minimize the praise and maximize dispraise to himself. He does not answer Strasser’s question directly, but uses the euphemistic expression “I’m a drunkard” to avoid answering the question.
E. Agreement maxim: minimize the disagreement and maximize the agreement to each other. People in communication always have agreement and disagreement. If people want to communicate with others and let others know that they are polite to them, they must minimize the disagreement and maximize the agreement to each other. E.g.
A: We’ll all miss Bill and Agatha, won’t we?
B: Well, we’ll miss Bill.
B minimizes the disagreement of A and maximizes the agreement to A. So B doesn’t say we will not miss Agatha directly, but uses euphemism to tell A his real meaning. The roles’ relationship between A and B is equal, intimate, and informal.
F. Sympathy maxim: minimize hate and maximize sympathy to others. Sympathy is a kind of feeling. Let others know that they are sympathy to them instead of hate to them is an expression of politeness. E.g.
one day a man was taunting Alexandre Dumas, the great French novelist, with his ancestry.
“Why,” snarled the fellow, “you are a quadroon; your father was a mulatto you’re your grand father was a Negro.”
“Yes,” roared Dumas, “and if you wish to know, my great-grandfather was a monkey. In fact, my pedigree began where your termin ates.”
(Ke Yanfen,1995:86)
We know Alexandre Dumas will feel very angry to the man’s words and will hate the man from convention. But Alexandre Dumas minimizes hate to the man and maximizes sympathy to the man. So he says that his pedigree began will the man terminate. When he says this, he is full of sympathy to the man because his ancestors are not human beings. Dumas uses euphemism to fight against the man’s words. That makes his counteroffensive more clear and forceful. The roles’ relationship between Alexandre Dumas and the man is equal, distant, and informal.
We have discussed the reasons of using euphemism in the three pairs of roles’ relationship in the above sections. They are seven psychological factors and politeness principle. The way of using euphemism is very important for people to communicate. In order to achieve the best communicative effect and let others know their real meaning, people must use the right way. So in the next section, we will analyze the way of using euphemism from speech act: locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts.
4. Analyses of using euphemism to achieve the aim in three pairs of roles’ relationship from speech act
Speech act theory is the first major theory in Pragmatics, initially proposed in the 1950s and wildly discussed in 1960s and 1970s. J.L Austin, the originator of speech act theory, was one of the ordinary language philosophers at Oxford, and a leading one at that. The first sense in which to say something can be understood as doing something Austin proposes is the ordinary sense of the movement of vocal organs to produce a stretch of meaningful sounds. In Austin words, it is “the utterance of certain noises, the utterance of certain words in a certain construction, and the utterance of them with a certain ‘meaning’ in the favorite philosophical sense of that word, i
