iating these words actually has power to do so. Second, we have to have the right circumstances for the utterance. In this example, Rick uses euphemism to answer the question. The roles’ relationship between Heinze and Rick is equal, distant, and formal. The hearer may describe the locutioary act in the example as “Rick said to Heinze ‘when you get there, ask me’”. The illocutionary acts performed in saying it may be described as “Rick answered Heinze’s question”. The perlocutio nary acts performed by Rick may not be what Heinze hopes. This brings up another difference between illocutionary and perlocutionary acts, i.e. one is related to intention and the other not. Form this example, we can know the illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts sometimes is contrary in euphemism.
A speech act is never just an ‘act of speech’, but should be considered in the total situation of activity of which it is a part (c.f Levinson 1979). E.g.
In England nobody under the age of eighteen is allowed to drink in a public bar. Mr. Thompson used to go to a bar near his house quite often, but he never took his son, Tom, because he was too young. Then when Tom had his eighteenth birthday, Mr. Thompson took him to his usual bar for the first time. They drank for half an hour, and then Mr. Thompson said to his son, “Now, Tom, I want to teach you a useful lesson. You must always be careful not to drink too much. And how do you know when you’ve had enough? Well, I’ll tell you. Do you see those two lights at the end of the bar? When they seem to have become four, you’ve had enough and should go home.”
“But, Dad,” said Tom “ I can only see one light at the end of the bar.”
(Ke Yanfen,1995:82)
Under the normal circumstances, by uttering the words “I can only see one light at the end of the bar”, Tom is making a statement (not a wish, promise, treat, judgment or what have you). The particular aspect of the speech act is its illocutionary ‘force’ or ‘point’; for many pragmaticians, this illocutionary force is intimately related to the very form the utterance may have: stating, wishing, promising etc. The real meaning of Tom is that his dad has drunk too much. We are talking about the perloctionary effect of Tom’s utterance. Such further effects depend, of course, on particular circumstances of the utterance, and are by no means always predictable. Tom just uses euphemistic expression to tell his dad his real meaning. The roles’ relationship between Tom and Mr. Thompson is unequal, distant, formal roles’ relationship. The locutionary act in the example is Mr. Thompson heard “I can only see one light at the end of the bar”. The illocutionary acts is Tom said to Mr. Thompson “I can only see one light at the end of the bar”. The perlocutioary acts perhaps is that Mr. Thompson goes home with Tom, or Mr. Thompson goes on drinking, etc.
In this general theory, every utterance is a speech act, consisting of three sub-acts: locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary, the second is the most important. The theory of speech act can in fact be said to be the theory of illocutionary acts. In order to achieve the best communicative effect, people use euphemism to communicative and let the others know the real meaning of speakers through locutionary acts, illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts.
Conclusion
Euphemism means the substitution of a mild, vague, or indirect expressi on for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant. Role means the posit
