关键词:languagecommunicationrelationshipThe definition of “role”Three pairs of roles’ relationship
Introduction
Euphemism exists in almost every of language. In order to avoid saying something that is more forceful and honest but unpleasant or offensive, people use euphemism in the communication. Many linguists study euphemism from the perspectives psychology, semantics, and phonetic. Mr. Liu Yanqi studies the structure of euphemism both in semantics and phonetic and their applications in the social life. Mr. Xu Jinyuan and Ms. Shu Dingfang study the peculiarity of euphemism. Mr. Rawson divides euphemism into positive euphemism and negative euphemism, etc. But in their study, nobody emphasizes the effect of “people” and the relationship of people. In the present article, all the study will be based on the effect of “people” and the roles’ relationship of people. We will analyze the reason why people use euphemism from psychological factors, politeness principle and the way that people use euphemism to achieve the desired aim. By this means, all the study bases on three pairs of roles’ relationship: equal and unequal, distant and intimate, formal and informal.
1. The definition of “euphemism” and “role”
1. 1 The definition of “euphemism”
In Webster’s Third-New International Dictionary, the definition of “euphemism” is a. the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive word or expression for one that is harsh, indelicate, or otherwise unpleasant or taboo: allusion to an offensive thing by an inoffensive expression-contrasted with dysphemism. b. a polite, tactful, or less explicit term used to avoid the direct naming of an unpleasant, painful, or frightening reality (Philip Babccock Gove and Merriam-Webster, 1976:784).The definition of “euphemism” in The Oxford English Dictionary is similar to the definition in Webster’s Third-New International Dictionary. It is a. that figure of speech which consists in the substitution of a word or expression of comparatively favorable implication or less unpleasant associations instead of the harsher or more offensive one that would more precisely designate what is intended. b. an instance of this figure; a less distasteful word or phrase used as a substitute for something harsher or more offensive (A S Honby, 1969:695). But the definition is simple in Longman Dictionary of the English Language and Cambridge International Dictionary of English. They are the substitution of a mild, vague, or indirect expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant (Addison Wesley Longman Company, 1984:505) and (the use of) a word or phrase used to avoid saying another word or phrase that is more forceful and honest but also more unpleasant or offensive (Procter.P, 2001:830) separately. In a word, the definition of “euphemism” is using a word or expression of comparatively favorable or less unpleasant or inoffensive instead of saying something that is unpleasant and offensive and harsher directly.
1.2 The definition of “role”
The definition of “role” in Webster’s Third-New International Dictionary is a. 1 a socially prescribed pattern of behavior corresponding to an individual’s status in a particular society. 2 a part played by an actor (as in a play or a movie) b. a function performed by someone or something in a particular situation, process or operation (Philip Babccock Gove and Merriam-Webster, 1976:1968). In Longman Dictionary of the English Language, the definition of “role” is a. 1 a character or part assumed by an actor or actress in a film, play. 2 a socially expected behavio
