Chapter I Description of the Translation Task

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

Human beings evolve from the primitive period into modern life living in groups forthousands of years,and on the whole,we still take family as the smallest social unit oflife.Today with the rapid development of society,the pressure of life increases,andpeople are paying more and more attention to issues such as mental health and happiness,which derive from family life mostly.However,relationships between family membersare not that harmonious as expected,especially between the female members in reality.Besides,we attach far less importance to mother and daughter topic than that betweendifferent genders or father and son relationship(Li Li,2015).Family life is greatly relatedto people’s mental health and happiness to some extent.In this circumstance,familystories have been a popular topic all over the world.

In fact,the relationship between female family members in modern life does notdepend on their own will entirely,but is always excessively influenced and interfered byexternal social factors which make the topic more complex.

I’m Sorry You Feel That Way can be seen as the female writer’s review about familyrelationship,self-criticism of women’s spiritual world as well as perceptual expressionabout female’s life in general and deep way.

1.2 Introduction to the Original Writer and Source Text

I’m Sorry You Feel That Way was written by Rebecca Wait from England，whograduated from Oxford University in 2010 with a first class degree in English.She’s beenwriting since she was a child and has won numerous prizes for short stories and plays.And I’m Sorry You Feel That Way was first published in July 2022 by QuercusPublishing.Up to now it has won a few prizes such as“A times Best Fiction Book of theYear”,“A Guardian Best Fiction Book of the Year”,“A BBC Culture Book of the Year”,and received a lot of positive media reviews.

With more than 110,000 words in total,the book consists of 15 chapters and tells thestory of family life with the mother-Celia and her two daughters-Alice and Hanna as themain characters.In a flashback format,the story begins with Alice holding a funeral forher aunt in 2018,paving the way of tense relationship between her twin sister and theirmother.The second chapter tells her mother’s childhood in the pathetic original familyand her college life.The mother Celia has been lack of love and security on grounds ofher parents preference for her sister Katy who had mental illness,which contributed toher personality characteristics of loneliness,indifference,suppression and sensitivity.Thelater chapters tells the story of Celia’s own family life after she got married.There wasMichael as the first boy and then the twin sisters,when the children were teenagers,theirfather had an affair and gone,and Celia became a single mother.
