5.1 Findings of the Study
This thesis attempts to explore the image variation and image reproduction of theEnglish translation of The Flowers of War under the guidance of Imagology Theory andresearch methodology.By understanding the core concepts of Imagology,decomposing thecore terms such as the definition of image,the Other and the Self and the social collectiveimagination,and then combining the internal and external research methods of the theory,this thesis analyzes the variation characteristics of the different images in the Englishtranslation and the translation strategies of image reproduction applied by Harman.Theresearch findings can be seen as follows.
For one thing,it is found that different images present various degrees of variation intranslation of The Flowers of War.Image variations are mainly reflected in the weakening ofdifferent images,image substitution and image deletion when translator tries to conveydifferent images.According to the internal and external analysis methodology,when itcomes to image weakening,it is found that Harman tends to choose words that are easier tounderstand with the target language or omit some detailed words to convey the meaning ofthe original text,but the cultural connotation of the original language is not fully expressed.In terms of image substitution,Harman intends to optimize some story details or adddescriptions of the personality characteristics of a certain character,which conflicted withthe original text but was more convenient for readers to understand.As for image deletion,Harman is found to have made special processing of the novel’s narration part and specificbloody depiction of historical reality.This may be in consideration of the reader’s ignoranceof historical events and avoid causing discomfort to the reader which is in line withHarman’s reader-centered translation philosophy.
