As the title implicated,this thesis aims to study the English version of The Flowers ofWar from perspective of Imagology focusing on the following questions:

1)What is the characteristic of image variation and reproduction in Harman’s translationof The Flowers of War?

2)How does the translator finish image variation and reproduction by applying differenttranslation strategies?

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Review of Harman’s Literary Translation

Nicky Harman(1950-)is an English translator and sinologist,president of the EnglishLiterary Translator’s Association,founder of Paper Republic and founder of China FictionBook Club in 2010.She worked for Imperial College London United Kingdom.In 1960s,major in Chinese,she received further education on University of Leads.Since then,shebecame a Chinese translation teacher focusing on translation theory.So from twenty firstcentury,Harman started to dedicate herself to study modern Chinese literature and intendedto communicate with Chinese writer and editor so as to translate the selected literary worksin a more appropriate way.As a professional translator,she had finished several translatedworks such as Jia Pingwa’s Happy Dreams and Broken Wings,Han Dong’s Banished,ZhangLing’s Gold Mountain Blues and Yan Geling’s The Flowers of War.The translation worksattract the target readers a lot especially Jia Pingwa’s Happy Dreams and Yan Geling’s TheFlowers of War.After accomplishing several successful translated works,Harman’sreader-orientation of translation strategy gradually formed.Therefore,in 2020,Harmanreceived the 14th Special Contribution of Chinese Books.

Harman’s view on literary translation gradually formed during her translation life.Thanks for her successful translated works,Chinese scholars pay great attention to hertranslation philosophies in last several years.Here the thesis categorizes them into three parts:literary works selection,translation strategies and translation purpose.

Firstly,Harman’s translation texts selection mainly comes from the publisher orpersonal preference(Li&Liu,2021:65).Her choice of works is subconsciously influencedby a variety of elements in actual translation efforts,including the translator's motivations,readers’expectations,the ideology of the nation or nationality of the translated language,poetics,and patrons.She was committed to translating real story which vividly presents thepeople’s daily life especially the works that reflect women.

2.2 Previous Studies on the English Translation of The Flowers of War
