MTI candidates are required to translate the English material of over 15,000words, which hasn’t been translated and published before, and to write a report withno less than 8,000 words in English based on the translation task. To meet therequirement, the translator has selected the novel The Stars Are Fire as the translationmaterial, because so for no Chinese version has ever appeared and because it is worthtranslating. Of the whole source text, the translator has chosen the first six chapters ofthis novel as a translation task, totaling almost 30,000 words. The six chapters are:“Wet,” “Dry,” “Spark,” “Fire,” “Cinders,” and “Music.” The translation of theexcerpts is included in the appendix.
In the following, a brief introduction will be made to the background knowledgeconcerning the novel and the key factors deciding the choice of the translation task.
1.1.1 The WriterAnita Shreve
The Stars Are Fire was written by the American writer Anita Shreve. Born in1946, Sherve grew up in Massachusetts, USA. Graduated from Tufts University witha bachelor’s degree in English in 1968, Shreve started her career as an English teacherat Reading Memorial High School. However, she never stopped pursuing her dreamof a writer. Having taught English for five years, she was engaged in writing shortstories, and then she worked as a freelance journalist. One of her stories Past theIsland, Drifting (1975) was awarded an O. Henry Prize in 1976. Her sixth novel, ThePilot’s Wife (2002), propelled her to stardom when it was chosen for Oprah’s BookClub in 1999. From then on, the readers were fascinated by Shreve’s books, and her books sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. Three of the author’s books – ThePilot’s Wife, Resistance (2003), and The Weight of Water (2000) which wasshort-listed for the Orange Prize were made into films, and many of her other bookshave become international bestsellers. 1.2 Significance of the Translation
The Stars Are Fire is a typical initiation novel that describes the growth of theprotagonist Grace from a submissive wife into an independent woman through afemale perspective, which is different from the common western female initiationstory. There are many female initiation novels in the west, such as Tess of thed’Urbervilles, Sister Carrie, etc., and the Chinese versions are well received in China. In essence, they cannot get rid of the traditional growing path of males, and thecharacteristics and differences of female self-growth aren’t highlighted. Moreover, western writers of initiation novels are mostly male, and they narrate the femalegrowth mainly from the perspective of men. Therefore, it always leads to some limitations in reflecting female subjectivity and their self-value. Female writers arethe forerunners of female consciousness, and they are apt at expressing their views onthe world through family and marriage themes with their own unique artisticperspectives. Anita Shreve is such a writer. In The Stars Are本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
