1. Introduction

With the help of electronic tools, translators can greatly improve their translation quality and efficiency. In the 21st century, an information age, science and technology are developing very fast. New knowledge and information keep coming into existence. Translators are feeling the long-term changes brought about by the information age more than other professionals. Under such circumstances, the traditional way of collecting information can not meet the gradually increasing demands of translation. It is unrealistic to expect a translator to be an expert in various fields of knowledge. Consequently, the use of information and communications technology is a fait accompli in the lives of today's language professionals. In fact, it is quite necessary to use electronic tools to improve translation efficiency and quality. This paper will generally introduce the functions of some major electronic tools that can be used in translation, such as corpora, online web sources, CD-ROMs, and so on. With the help of electronic tools, translators can quickly and efficiently retrieve people' names, geographical names, background information, special terms of translation-related information in humanities, history, geography, literature, science technology, religion, business, medicine, biology technology and so on.
