and discuss the causes of this marginalization. It ispointed out that the root of the marginalization of the translator in China lies in theChinese social mentality. The Chinese culture always saw itself as the center of theworld and did not attach much importance to communication with other cultures.Translation was regarded as a means of fulfilling certain political and social purposes. As a result, there were not many scholarly discussions on translation, neither werethere many reflections on the translator. The second cause originates from the typicalChinese mode of thinking and understanding, which was abstract and sentimental. This mode exerted great impacts upon serious thinking on translation and thetranslator. Researches on the translator thus became either oversimplified, touchingupon only the translator's language competence and professional qualifications, ormystified, assuming that translation is largely determined by such factors as thetranslator's gift and personality that are beyond systematic clarification. The thirdcause of the marginalization of the Chinese translator can be viewed from the personalstatus of the translator himself. Most of those famous Chinese translators in historyboasted other more prestigious identities such as writer, scholar, and governmentofficial, and their identity as a translator was often ignored.       As for western translators, the first factor that led to the marginaliztion of theirstatus was the history of Bible translation, which requires the subservience of thetranslator to the word of God. Therefore, the translator became a mere mouthpiece ofGod and thus fell into neglect. The second reason, which was similar to that in China, was that a great number of famous Western translators were remembered by theirother more conspicuous identities like scholar and writer, etc. The final origin was the"narcissistic" cultural mentality born of the fast development of capitalism in the Westas well as the wide employment of domestication strategy in translation, particularlyin Anglo-American culture, which resulted in the "invisibility" of the translator.     I also compare the awareness of the translator's role and the studies on thetranslator in both Chinese and Western translation theories. Based on this, I introducemy aim to further the research on the translator from the following aspects: 1 .Whatthe working mechanism of the translator or the translator's subjectivities is/are andhow it leaves imprints on the translation; 2. How the recognition of the translator'ssubjectivities challenges traditional translation standards; 3. What the translator'sposition in cross-cultural communication is and how s/he performs and exerts impacton it; 4. How the translator reacts to external constraints and deals with interpersonalrelationships in the process of translation. Then the methodology of my dissertationand its composition and construction are introduced.
Chapter One reviews how the translator's role has been understood in translationhistory. I first discuss four kinds of false sentiments against the translator. The firstsentiment is the domineering spirit held by some translators and translation theorists. An over-domineering translator tends to go to the extreme, which, in most cases, smears the reputation of the translator. Perfectionism is the second reason that resultedin the misunderstanding about the translator. It refers to论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
