Chapter Two Source Text Analysis
2.1 Content of the Source Text
The Guardian founded in 1821, is a British daily newspaper. It is one of the world’s most influential newspapers and known as the UK’s three major newspapers, together with The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Known for its liberal reporting style, the Guardian is regarded as one of the representatives of Britain’s leftwing cultural and intellectual elite, renowned for its impartiality, critical thinking, and in-depth analysis, and widely praised for providing high-quality journalism, in-depth reporting, and independent criticism.
As an independent newspaper, its aim is to provide high-quality news reports, analyses, editorials and opinions, respecting freedom of expression and individual rights, to promote public understanding and participation in current events.
It focuses on in-depth analysis and commentary, and strives to provide readers with high quality news and opinions in areas such as cosmopolitan opinion, literary reporting and commentary, and foreign communications. Among them, the “Opinion Section” mainly focuses on domestic and foreign politics, economy, culture, sports, entertainment, science and technology, environment, and other fields to discuss, and editorial departments or columnists express collective views on certain topics. The content follows current events, presenting and discussing the events of life.
2.2 Lexical Features of the Source Text
The language analysis of the source text is an important part of text translation, and only when the language characteristics are fully grasped and clearly understood can the translation practice be accomplished with high quality. The text of foreign publication often has its own linguistic characteristics, especially the material chosen by the translator is news editorial, which can be seen from lexical features of the source text.
Words that show the relationship of nouns and pronouns to other words in a sentence are called prepositions. Prepositions are function words that cannot be stressed and cannot be used as sentence elements alone (Svartvik & Leech, 1983:130). They need to be used as sentence elements together with the words that follow them.
English preposition is a kind of frequently used functional word. As its name implies, prepositions are intermediate words that connect noun phrases behind with other components, such as nouns, phrases, and clauses, to express the relationship between the two words (Curme, 1931). Prepositions play the role of bridge in sentences. Some people even say that English is the language of prepositions, which shows that prepositions play a vital role in English. We know that prepositions appear more frequently in news and academic literature than in daily conversations. That is to say, the more formal the text, the higher the frequency of prepositions. The Guardian’s “opinion section” belongs to the news text and is a formal style, so it also has this feature.
