The Chinese monograph Variational Translation Theory published by China Translation and Publishing Corporation in January 2002 is an early achievement of this theory. According to Huang Zhonglian and Zhang Yongzhong (2020: Ⅴ), “In recognition of its widespread impact on the research and practice of translation scholars, practitioners and graduate students, it was listed as an entry in A Dictionary of Translation Studies in China”. Xu (2017: 8) asserts “The originator of variational translation thoughts is Yan Fu but variational translation theory is put forward and formed by Huang who has scrutinized and analyzed Yan Fu’s translations consistently”. In the past decade, the concept of “variational translation” has undergone a transformation from a mere observation of phenomena to a recognition of its essence, and its definition has been continuously refined and improved (Liu, 2019). The theoretical system of variational translation integrates theories, guiding ideology, and operating methods.

4.1 Adding

Huang Zhonglian and Zhang Yongzhong (2020: 92) asserts “Adding refers to adding information to original works. There are three ways of adding: explanation, commentary, and writing”. Adding not only offers extra contextual information but also has a functional purpose of promoting culturally relevant information and aiding readers’ comprehension (Aona, 2022). Many readers of the target language are not familiar with some foreign information. Given that it is necessary to use adding to illustrate some parts of the source text, including explanations for allusion, words and contents, difficult parts.

(ST=source text; TT=target text)

[ST]: It was at this school that I passed my 11+ to enter Grammar school without really knowing what I was doing. (see Appendix A, p.63) 

[TT]: 11+考试为英国公立文法学校和一些私立学校的小升初选拔考试。正是在这所学校,我通过了11+考试,进入了文法学校,但我并不知道自己在做什么。(see Appendix B,p.86) 

[Analysis]:

According to the variational translation theory, the explanation is not simply found in the footnotes; it is integrated into the text (Huang, 2002b). In this case, the translator writes a sentence “11+考试为英国公立文法学校和一些私立学校的小升初选拔考试” at the beginning of this sentence, which provides a brief explanation to the 11+.
