1.1 A Brief Review of Ecofeminism
The following part will give a brief introduction of the development and the main ideas of ecofeminism, and lay the theoretical foundation for the analysis.
1.1.1 The Development of Ecofeminism
Ecofenimism first emerged as a social and political movement that united environmentalism and feminism. The word was coined by French feminist Francoise D’Eaubonne in 1974. She argues that the oppression and the liberation of women and nature are closely related. This movement then experienced rapid development in (both? ) 不用特指both social and political and the academic realm.
The thriving development of ecofeminism is no coincidence. It is the joint fruit of the ecological and feminist movement in the latter half of the 20th century. In 1980s and 1990s, the increasingly severe environmental crisis caused some literary critics to concern themselves (about) with the environmental issues in literature. And as D’Eaubonne advocated, women were actively engaged in the environmental protection. Ecofeminism has been conducting political movement and has advanced theoretically as well. Important figures of ecofeminists include Carolyn Merchant, Ynestra King, Karren J. Warren, Val Plumwood, Patrick D. Murphy, Rosemary Ruether, and Vandana Shiva.
Carolyn Merchant’s book The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology and the Scientific Revolution in 1980 achieved great influences. She aims “to examine the values associated with the images of women and nature as they relate to the formation of our modern world and their implications for our lives today…and to reexamine the formation of a world view and a science that, by reconceptualizing reality as a machine rather than a living organism, sanctioned the domination of both nature and women (Merchant 21).” Her works criticizes the dominant Western science for its mechanical view on nature which results the subordinate position of nature and women. Val Plumwood further exploited this topic in her book Feminism and the Mastery of Nature (1993) by illustrating the negative thinking of rationalism. Karen J. Warren and Nisvan Erkal summarize the previous ecofeminist ideas in a critical way in their co-edited book Ecofeminism: Women, Culture, Nature (1997), giving a comprehensive review about the theoretical construction of ecofeminism. Vandana Shiva, an Indian ecofeminist scholar, further the scope of ecofeminism to include the environment justice, democracy of state and sustainable development in her book Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability and Peace in 2005.
From the development of ecofeminism, it is clear that the scope of ecofeminism has been greatly widened, from the original concern of nature-women connection under the Western epistemic system to a wider range of knowledge, from the original liberation of women and nature to the liberation of human beings, both women and men, and to the liberation of all oppressed humans.
