Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

As one of the hottest subjects in the second language acquisition field,learningmotivation has drawn a lot of attention from researchers studying SLA.Motivation,as one ofthe most critical factors affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of second language learning,is widely accepted by teachers and researchers.Learning motivation can not simply inspirelearners’inherent enthusiasm and encourage students to make clear learning goals,but alsoinfluence students’behaviors.Even the most gifted individuals cannot accomplish long-termobjectives without learning motivation.And appropriate instructions and content cannotguarantee students’success.Furthermore,strong motivation to learn can make up forsignificant deficiencies in language proficiency and learning environments.

The study of L2 learning motivation originated in the 1950s.It was first researched byRobert Gardner and Wallace Lambert.Learning motivation was thought to be one of the mostinfluential aspects of language acquisition for a long time,which led to a spike in bothdomestic and foreign study on the subject of SLA.Scholars explained it from differentperspectives,which tried to solve the mystery of motivation.In general,it experienced fourperiods:social psychological period,cognitive-situated period,process-oriented period andsocial dynamic period in the past half-century.By the third stage,the L2 learning motivationstudy continued the linear causality model,which needed to be revised to explain the complexmotivation system.

1.2 Research Significance

The study of senior high school students’learning motivation based on DMCs theory isof great significance theoretically and practically.

Firstly,based on DMCs Theory,this study provides more evidence for the universality of DMCs.The research is of great use in enriching DMCs Theory.Despite being the recentresearch hypothesis on the motivation of SLA,it is still in the theoretical development stageand lacks substantial supporting evidence.Since DMCs Theory is new,it has not receivedenough attention from researchers,additional relevant studies are required to validate itseffectiveness.What’s more,DMCs is a promising area with much Educational potential.Different from the research carried out on universities that rely on quantitative methods,thisstudy applies quantitative methods and qualitative methods,which pay attention to thevariation in senior high school students’learning motivation and provide a new perspective tothe understanding of L2 learning motivation.Academics can carry out a number of empiricalinvestigations from DMCs perspective.
