摘要:本文是一篇商务英语翻译论文,本报告主要运用李长栓教授提出的“理解、表达、变通”框架,对案例进行分析。李教授把翻译的过程分为理解、表达、变通三部分,他认为,译者对原文的理解应该接近、达到甚至超越原作者的水平,在表达方面,译者应该传达作者明确表达、希望表达甚至应该表达的意思。

The translator read the source text from cover to cover when she was a junior student, and got a general impression about the main characters and the plot. A year later, she decided to translate this novel. Before translation, some research was done to help the translator get a better understanding of the source text.

Firstly, the translator needed to learn about the author. She went to Amazon and Goodreads and other websites to learn the biography of the author. The translator found that the author is still alive, and followed the author on a few social medias. After that, the distance between the author and the translator became closer and the translator felt it was easier to relate to the author.

Secondly, the translator started a term base, including all names, bug terms and other frequently used terms in order to achieve consistency in the following translation process. As for corpus, she used Baidu and Google for reference materials.

Lastly, the translator made a schedule. The translator decided to finish the first draft in a month, which means 500 words per day. And the second draft should be reviewed about the same time. From then on, several revisions were made. 

2.2 While-translation

The translator consulted dictionaries and libraries to rescue her from the lack of knowledge. Tools such as the term bank and parallel texts also helped her in the translation process. 

When she came across new words, phrases, or terms, she would first consult online E-E dictionaries, acquiring a basic understanding of its meaning. Then she would check the images, Wikipediae or websites to get a deeper understanding of what it means. Finally, she would search the Chinese equivalent that she had in mind to confirm her assumption and took this chance to observe how to use that term in Chinese. 

She visited the university library and a few problems were solved there. For example, she went to the weapon section and found the proper name of a gun that was mentioned in the novel.

The term bank and the parallel texts were of great assistance. Somewhere in the middle of translation, the translator found that the word “said” was used excessively in the source text. After research, it was found that the word “say” is used more frequently in English than in Chinese, especially when two persons are talking to each other in succession. In that case, the translator decided to delete some “he said” and “she said” to achieve simplicity.
