摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文的研究不但对于中国人在国际环境下理解英美人的语言表达的逻辑性和思维习惯、了解不同民族的文化差异、提高交流水平和减少误解具有较大的实践意义,而且对于英语语篇教学以及翻译实践中逻辑语义关系的转换方面也具有指导意义。
e are altogether seven English texts as research data, including 335 clause complexes with 14468 words. Analyzing the clause complexes one by one, the author distinguishes all the logical-semantic relationships between clauses in clause complexes, and the data and examples are provided in the following details. In the process of analyzing and calculating the seven English texts, elaboration of logical-semantic relations occurs 115 times, which occupies 19.42% of the three subtypes of expansion. Here are some typical examples selected from the texts: (1) We need to set our sights higher than just making sure government doesn’t screw things up; that government doesn't halt the progress we're making. (2) We don’t just want everyone to share in America’s success –we want everyone to contribute to our success. (3) I’ve heard some folks try to dodge the evidence by saying they’re not scientists; that we don’t have enough information to act. These three examples are typical paratactic elaboration, and the relationship between clauses is exposition. In example (1), the secondary clause government doesn't halt the progress we're making restates the topic of the primary clause government doesn’t screw things up with different expressions, but the two clauses express the same meaning. In example (2), the secondary clause we want everyone to contribute to our success reinforces the meaning of the primary clause We don’t just want everyone to share in America’s success by using a more specific meaning to express the same topic as the primary clause. In example (3), the secondary clause presents the topic of the primary clause in a negative expression, but the two clauses express the same meaning of Present Obama.

Conclusion
In this chapter, the thesis goes to the conclusion part that provides the major findings in relation to the research questions, shows the implications and limitations of present study, and makes some suggestions for further study. Based on Halliday?s theory of logical-semantic relation, this thesis makes comparative and contrastive analysis of logical-semantic relations between English and Chinese clauses in texts. According to Halliday, logical-semantic relation determines the relationship between two clauses is expansion or projection, and this thesis mainly focuses on the expansion of logical-semantic relation which includes elaboration, extension, and enhancement.
