Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

The appearance of the verb-complement construction is one of the five majorchanges that have occurred in Chinese grammar,and it is a major event in the history ofChinese grammar,which has made Chinese expressions more precise.It is an aspect ofsocial and cultural development,so it is worthwhile for us to study it in depth andsummarize some developmental rules.As a linguistic phenomenon characterizing basichuman spatial and body experiences,the verb-directional construction has been a hottopic of language research because of its semantic diversity and high-frequency usage.Inthe existing studies,the studies of directional verb or verb-directional construction havecovered a wide range of topics,from generation to development,from property tosemantics,from structure to syntax,and so on(Chen Changlai,1994;Fan Xiao,1995;Ding Ping,2004;Liang Yinfeng,2007;Wang Yiguang,2016).However,the semanticinterpretation of verb-directional construction is the core issue.Liu Yuehua(1998)makesan extensive study of twenty-eight Chinese directional verbs and suggests that thesemantics of verb complements could be divided into three major categories:directionalmeaning,resultative meaning and state meaning.Liang Yinfeng(2007)explores thesemantic evolution of verb complements and proposes that the order of verb complementevolution is directional meaning>resultative meaning>temporal meaning.To figure outthe semantic features of directional verbs,there are many scholars investigate a particularverb-directional construction,such as“V dao”construction,“V shang”construction,and“V kai”construction(Wu Xia,2020;Chen Xuanyu,2020;Chen Yuxi,2020).With the promotion of many former scholars,the study of cognitive semantics is alsodeepening under the guidance of theoretical approaches such as conceptual metaphor,image schema and conceptual structure in cognitive linguistics.

1.2 Research Questions

Based on the research background elaborated above,this thesis attempts toinvestigate the following questions:

(1)How many types of macro-event does the verb-directional construction“V lai”represent and what are the semantic characteristics in representing different macro-event?

(2)What are the cognitive mechanisms involved in the semantic extension of theverb-directional construction“V lai”?How do they operate respectively?

(3)Is there any special usage of“V lai”independent of the five types ofmacro-event?

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Research on Verb-directional Construction

The notion of verb-directional construction was first proposed by Lv Shuxiang(1980)in the book Xian Dai Han Yu Ba Bai Ci《现代汉语八百词》.Since then,thecomposition formed by“main verb+directional verb”is generally called the“verb-directional construction”.As a linguistic phenomenon representing the basicspatial and physical experience of human beings,it is a popular topic in language fieldand has been receiving special attention due to its wide range of semantics andhigh-frequency usage.
