sp;of  systemic  functional  linguistics  created  by  famous  linguist  Halliday  and  the  issues about the applications of this theory in Chinese studies, foreign language teaching and so on, and many scholars have expressed their views and showed their achievements. In this seminar, Hu  Zhuanglin  discussed  the  Chinese  clause  and  clause  complex  under  the  framework  of Halliday?s  theory  of  clause  complex.  Firstly,  Hu  considers  the  Chinese  clause  is  the  same  as English  clause  that  it  is  one  of  the  basic  grammatical  units.  Secondly,  he  points  out  that because of the characteristics of Chinese itself, it is somewhat different from English in clause combinations.  The  English  clause  may  be  divided  into  main  clause  and  subordinate  clause, finite clause and  non-finite clause, and  major clause and  minor  clause;  however, the Chinese clause  may  only  be  divided  into  major  clause  and  minor  clause  (1990:  126).  Besides,  Hu analyzes  different  types  of  Chinese  clause  complex  with  the  theory  of  Halliday?s  clause complex  from  the  perspective  of  interdependency  relation  and  logical-semantic  relation.  The views  and  achievements  discussed  in  this  seminar  have  been  edited  by  Hu  Zhuanglin  and published in his book Language System and Function in 1990.
