t  foundation  to  organize  and  understand  a  text,  and  it  exists  in  all kinds  of  texts.  In  a  text,  in  terms  of  coherence,  the  absence  of  the  means  of  grammatical  or lexical cohesion is allowed, but the absence of logical cohesion is impossible, otherwise there will  be no complete semantic wholeness,  in other words, there will  be  no texts (He Shanfen, 2002: 467). The creation of a text is always on the basis of logical-semantic relations. All the semantic relations are built on the basis of  logical relations and emerge by  logical structures. That  is  to  say,  the  understanding  of  a  text  is  the  understanding  of  the  logical-semantic relations by logical structures. In a word, the study of logical-semantic relations  in texts is of great  importance.  But  up  to  now,  there  are  not  many  studies  on  texts  with  the  theory  of logical-semantic  relations,  and  most  of  them  are  about  translation  or  pure  theory.  There  are even  little  studies  on  comparative  and  contrastive  studies  of  logical-semantic  relations between English and Chinese clauses in texts. In general, the main objective of this thesis is to make a comparative and contrastive study between English and Chinese clauses in texts  from the perspective of logical-semantic relationships between clauses. First  of  all,  this  thesis  will  explore  the  features  of  logical-semantic  relations  between clauses  in English and Chinese texts, and then try to find out the similarities  and differences between  them,  which  is  helpful  for  better  understanding  of  different  thinking  patterns  and linguistic  features  of  English  and  Chinese  languages,  and  also  may  enhance  L2  learners? intercultural awareness and promote intercultural communication.

Chapter Two  Literature Review 

Logical-semantic  relation  is  one  of  the  relationships  within  clause  complex,  which includes interdependency relation and logical-semantic relation. Therefore, in order to analyze logical-semantic relation, it is more necessary to have a study on clause complex firstly. This chapter  provides  the  literature  review  of  clause  complex,  which  includes  studies  on  clause complex abroad and studies on clause complex at home. 

2.1   Studies on Clause Complex Abroad 
Systemic  functional  grammar  school  represented  by  M.A.K.  Halliday  regarded  clauses as basic grammatical units.
