ChapterⅠ Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Intonation is the soul of human language, and it plays an important role in the expressionof emotion and attitude. Regardless of any language or dialect, intonation is inevitable, whichespecially matters in communication between different languages, for it cannot onlydisambiguate, convey information, but also indicate the speaker's tone and attitude(Gimson,1980; Pike,1972).From the differences between English intonation and Chinese intonation systems, thereare indeed some cultural features which must be paid attention to; otherwise, the Chinese tonewill lead to negative transfer which is non-sense for the success of communication.For the intonation teaching in China, the traditional method is designed to allow studentsto perceive intonation through a lot of listening and imitating practices, which can, to someextent, allow students to understand some of the basic rules of intonation, for example, thefalling tone usually for declarative sentences and the rising tone for general questions, but thequestions of how and when to do are difficult for the students to grasp. The reason is that as atone language, English intonation can be achieved through diverse combinations and that’swhy English intonation is one of the most difficult points for Chinese EFL learners.

1.2 Objectives and Significance
In the trend of more and more frequent exchanges among world science and technology,politics and economy, the purpose of English learning is increasingly clear, so the students’need of practical communication and cultural interact will also be further improved.Therefore, it is necessary to empirically study the intonation features of Chinese collegeEnglish learners in order to avoid the wrong intonation mode and better serve for theinternational exchange and cooperation.Based on the speech database and the intonation 3Ts theory of Halliday (1967), thisstudy is devoted to find out the deviations of intonation features between native Englishspeaker and Chinese college EFL learners. The content mainly includes the distribution ofboundary indicators in an intonation group, the placement of the nucleus and lastly, the tonetypes of the different sentence patterns.Theoretically, this study can build an inter-language intonation platform which is oftonality, tonicity and tone; in this aspect, it broadens the application of English intonation and enrich the theories if intonation acquisition.Practically, the study may reveal the weak points in intonation teaching , which theEnglish teachers can pay more attention to and strengthen it or inspire them explore moreeffective methods to improve teaching. For the aspect of students, they can not only learnEnglish through the visualized instruments like Praat which can be more effectively Englishlearning and they can easily find their mistakes in intonation. All these can help the studentsovercome these difficulties in intonation learning.

Chapter II Literature Review
This chapter mainly presents the theoretical issues and the EFL learners’ intonationstudies abroad and at home. First, the theoretical basis of this study for example, the conceptsof intonation and some related items such as pause, stress are introduced. Then, the EFLlearners’ and Chinese EFL learners’ intonation studies are summarized and evaluated indifferent aspects. At last, based on the above
