Often that information is imbedded in the software you use for your lesson plans, rosters and seating charts and it is not something you will have to run around collecting from the front office, or from the student. Many veteran teachers like to have students fill out index cards with all their information so that it is at their fingertips. Forget it. It takes up time better spent getting to know your students or teaching. Not to mention that on innumerable occasions you will find when you go to make a parent call your student has transposed phone numbers and you will get your local Chinese restaurant instead of the parent or emergency contact you are seeking. If you feel you need a hard copy, download the roster and print it.
Behavioral Intervention

Another important student record to keep is a behavioral intervention files. For most classes you will simply need a log to record when you have called parents for positive or negative behavior issues and to track when you have assigned a detention or written a referral. Your copy of detentions and referrals should be kept together in a file folder and they will be discussed at length, including positive feedback for students in Chapter 5.
Professional Employment Files

Teachers will always want to cordon off a section of their file cabinet, or create a binders for professional information. They will need to keep things on hand like employee contracts, certification paperwork, and any workshop points or records of endorsement that may have been earned. There is also insurance information, and any paperwork received from your administration on your reviews. These records, like the students will need to be kept for more than just one school year.
Classroom Checklists

As you have probably gathered from this chapter teachers are responsible for keeping track of everything from students to text books, to digital equipment, to who has what locker and the combination. At the end of this chapter are suggested, reproducible checklists that teachers can use to keep records. Checklists can all be kept in a binder with dividers labeling what each checklist is for. Teachers will need access to student check lists, especially the student locker records. You would be surprised how many students go on Christmas vacation only to return with no memory of their locker combination.


 Classroom Management: Rules and Discipline

It is safe to say that classroom management will make or break you as teacher, but, rarely is there a full semester class that covers the topic in a college classroom. Teachers who have mastered appropriate classroom management will, on most days, go home feeling content and accomplished in their careers and their students will have learned that day. Teachers who do not, rarely last, and if they do, they are easily identified by their cynicism and crassness in the teacher's lounge. To avoid new teachers becoming the later, this chapter picks up where schools have left off: the basic rules of the classroom, tried and true ways of enforcing rules, and making your classroom a safe, bully free zone.
