Students' Handiwork

Additionally, creative student assignments are an excellent way to bring your classroom to life. For example, Science projects are often quite decorative, math teachers may choose to display origami, and language art teachers may have students create vocabulary pictures. Displaying student work encourages self-confidence and classroom ownership.
Teacher Stores

One of the best kept secrets in education is the district teacher store. Generally, districts have a warehouse where there is everything from used teacher furniture to construction paper. All sorts of materials and supplies may be available to make a new teacher's classroom cozy, yet efficient. Check with your department chair and see if your district has a place like this. Most districts simply require that teachers have a note from the school's principal in order to gain access and shop for whatever is needed. Although there may be a limit to what one can 'purchase' new teachers should be able to pick up at least the basic supplies such as staplers, pens, pencils, construction paper, and maybe even bulletin board borders. If your department chair is unsure you bookkeeper will have an idea of how you can gain access to the warehouse or teacher store.

White Boards

White boards have taken the place of chalk boards and rightfully so. Teachers used to go home with hands, hair, clothes, and lungs covered in chalkboard dust. New teachers need to simply be careful about leaning on the board so as not to end up with clothes covered in expo marker. Some companies have even come up with Expo markers that smell pleasant.

Train your students to have their eyes go to the white board for the day's instruction. You can colorfully split your white board into sections with ? inch electrical tape purchased at your local hardware store. It comes in basic colors such as red, blue and green . There should be a small section for your daily agenda, essential questions or objectives for the day or week, materials needed, and homework.

The rest of your board can be utilized for your lessons. It is a good idea to set up extra expo markers at your board. Students enjoy the opportunity to go to the board and do a little instructing, themselves. Random students can come to the board to write the correct answer the bell ringers (see Chapter 6), workout a math problems, or perhaps correct a grammatically incorrect sentence.
Posting Classroom Rules

Once you have decided on classroom rules, and you will find help with that in the next chapter, post them where they are obvious to all who enter. For the first weeks of school you may need to refer to those rules on several occasions, reminding your students of your expectations. Leave them there for the year lest they forget.
Filing and Record Keeping

Teaching brings mounds of information to organize from education plans to lesson plans, to worksheets. This plethora of paperwork can turn into a confusing load if not organized properly. New teachers should learn what they need at their finger tips and decide ahead of time what would best fit their style of organization. For example, the day's lesson plans should be readily available, but most teachers need not crowd their desk with an entire unit. Here are some suggestions.
