Textbook Accessibility

Teachers should have shelving for text books and ancillary materials that are easily accessible to her students, and shelving for teacher editions and materials that are easily accessible to her. Most often classrooms are already set up with what a teacher needs. Newer schools will have convenient built in shelving and cabinets. If not check with your custodians about whether they have shelves in a supply room.

Some schools have discretionary funds for which they may purchase classroom furniture. If that is the case, your bookkeeper may check with you upon your arrival at school to see what you need. Peruse your room and make sure you have plenty of shelving. If not and your school is offering, take advantage of those discretionary funds. Teachers can never have too many shelves or cupboards. If you don't need them later, and they are in your way you can always have them sent to a storage closet.

Ideally, schools will provide each student with a book to take home and the teacher with a classroom set of the same text. (Eventually, books will be replaced with jump drives or texts on C.D.'s, but that's another chapter). Students will then always have accessibility to their books at school and at home and holding up the class period for a student who forgot his book is non-existent.
Student Supplies and Cost Efficient Lending

Middle school students will assure their teachers and all the adults around them that they have gained complete independence and no longer need teacher or parental intervention, yet they cannot remember to bring a pencil to class. Supply distribution services may not be in a teacher's job description, but not providing students with the supplies they need is counter productive to the learning process and will create disruption in the classroom.
Pencils and Paper

Teachers historically used various interventions to guarantee students remember to bring their supplies to class and have found that no matter what intervention used, students will forget, loose, chew on, sharpen down to a hobbit size writing implement, crumple, throw, draw on, pencils and paper. It cannot be avoided and therefore you will need an abundant supply. This, however creates an additional expense, but there are ways for teachers to keep students provided with materials without having to invest their own life savings..

One way avoid unnecessary spending on supplies is to have students borrow instead of keep pencils and pens. In order to safeguard the return of borrowed items teachers will n have students surrender something of value. This may be their school I.D., or agendas, which are mandatory in many schools, or some teachers even have students surrender one of their shoes, smelly, but effective in having their materials returned.

Another way to keep costs down is to send home a 'wish list'. When supply lists go out for students, teachers may request a box of pencils and pack of paper from each student, along with the other staples that may be needed in the classroom. The next chapter discusses the syllabus. Often included in the syllabus is a list of supplies the students will need. Teachers can include a separate list of 'requested, but not required' items teacher gets the pencil back at the end of the class so teachers are not putting their life savings into pencil supplies.
