4.1 Class Shifts Class shifts are also called part of speech shift.Category shifts are defined as the difference between the linguistic units of the source language and the translation equivalents of the target language.This includes examples such as converting nouns to verbs,adjectives to verbs,adjectives to nouns,and prepositions to verbs.Part of speech shift is frequently employed in English-Chinese translation because there are far too many long phrases in English and the sentence pieces are more complicated in Chinese than they are in English.Part-speech shift is able to overcome the constraints of the original language structure and change many literal expressions that are awkward and stiff intoones that flow more naturally.One of the most popular translation techniques,part of speech shift,is a crucial tactic to prevent Chin lish.

This translation practice translates the third and fourth chapters of the book The Science of Stuck:Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward from English to Chinese under the guidance of Cat ford’s translation shifts theory.During the process of translation,the translator tried her best to take grammar,vocabulary,phrases,sentences,and context into consideration in order to enhance translation quality,produce a more fluid and natural translation,and effectively convey information to readers while maintaining the original meaning.

Looking back at this translation practice,the translator has gained a lot.First,preparation before translation is very important. P re-translation preparation includes reading and analysis of source texts,reading of parallel texts,selection of translation aids,and task planning.In the whole process,the translator learned to use various search engines to find information more skillfully,make a glossary quickly and use some translation AIDS.

Second,revision after translation is very important.Many problems can often be found in the revision process.Translator believes that the self-revision stage is the key to improve self-ability,and through revision,she can find out the missing and fill in the gaps.After discovering the problem,the translator thought for herself first,and then discussed and analyzed it with her peers to solve the problem.The process of revision is the process of self-improvement.
