Chapter One Task Description

1.1 Task Background

The translation task was entrusted by the translator’s supervisor, and the source text is excerpted from Jane Dowson’s academic monograph Carol Ann Duffy: Poet for Our Times. The translator translated two sections of the first chapter, “Poet for Our Times”. The source text has a total of approximately 7,600 English words and the translation contains about 16,000 Chinese characters. The entire translation process took 5 months. 

Published by Palgrave Macmillan on 2016, Carol Ann Duffy: Poet for Our Times is an academic monograph to discuss the career, publications, and influence of Britain’s first female poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, which sketches out her impact on trends in contemporary poetry and defines the term of “Duffyesque”. The author Jane Dowson is a considerable literary critic as well as Reader in Twentieth-Century Literature at De Montfort University, who is keen on many periods and genres of literature. She started studying women’s poetry with the poetry of the 1930s and then expanded her study to the modernist period (1910-39). Her main publications on women’s poetry include Women’s Poetry of the 1930s, A Cambridge History of Twentieth-Century British Women’s Poetry (co-authored), and The Cambridge Companion to Twentieth-Century British and Irish Women’s Poetry. 

1.2 Features of the Source Text

Before translating any type of text, it is essential to analyze the features of the text in order to help the translator comprehend and master the source text. The source text of the task is excerpted from an academic monograph, so it shares some of the textual features of the academic monograph, such as being highly reliable, linguistically accurate, well-structured, logically rigorous, as well as fair and objective. The features of the source text can be summarized in the following four aspects. 

First of all, the academic language used in the source text is accurate, exact and objective, which is highlighted by the use of terminologies and precise choice of words. In addition, there are also some culture-loaded words. The translation of these terminologies as well as culture-loaded words requires the translator to consult a large number of references and carefully consider the cultural background of the source text. 

Secondly, the source text is featured by complex syntax, in which long sentences and multiple clauses are widely used. These long and complex sentences require the translator to reorganize sentence structures to make them clear and fluent when translating them into Chinese. What’s more, the passive voice is also frequently used. Thus, the translator should well grasp the difference between English and Chinese grammar, and make appropriate voice conversion, bringing the translation more in line with the grammatical characteristics of the Chinese.
