4.1 Lexical Closeness

According to the feature of the source text, many words in the original text, such as proper nouns, terminologies and cultural-loaded words, are language expressions of great importance which need to be translated very closely to the original words. From a lexical perspective, close translation refers to the word-to-word translation. The word-to-word translation does not mean the literal translation of a word to a word, but different strategies can be used to achieve the close translation according to different situations (Wang and Hu 100). The close translation preserves both the denotation and the connotation of the word, as well as its usage (Yang S. Z. 49). Therefore, the translator adopts different strategies such as naturalization and reculturalization, annotation, contextual amplification, as well as conversion of parts of speech to achieve the close translation at lexical level. 

4.1.1 Naturalization and Reculturalization

Naturalization in Newmark’s theory requires some changes in the form of words during the translation to adapt to the morphology of the target language, which is mainly in terms of word form or word formation, while reculturalization of cultural terms means some cultural change of the words to adapt to cultural background of the target language. Since English and Chinese have their own vocabulary system and method of word formation, it may cause inconvenience in understanding if the translator only literally translates a word without any changes. Therefore, naturalization and reculturalization are indispensable to make the translation more in line with the language habits of the target language and make the target readers understand the translation more easily.

Chapter Five Conclusion

On the basis of the translation practice of the Poet for Our Times, this report analyzes and summarizes the translation strategies of academic texts under the guidance of Newmark’s correlative approach to translation. Through the translation practice the translator has found that it is feasible to use the correlative approach to translation to guide the translation of academic texts. In the process of translating and writing the report, the translator had gained a lot. 

Firstly, through this translation practice, the translator has realized the significance of preparations before translation.
