摘要:This paper is just a humble trial for sparking mature and in-depth points by others. This author, considering the limitations of this thesis, hopes that in the future, researchers equipped with more theoretical competence could achieve more along the path.
acters have been regarded as guiding principles for translation for many years in China. However, the content summed up in the three characters is very general or even sweeping, especially the first character “fitfulness”. In what way can a translation be said as “faithful”? There have been many interpretations in search of them over the years. Professor Wang Zuoliang explained the three characters raised by Yan Fu: “faithfulness” means the translator should express the original meaning accurate. “Expressiveness” means the translator should make every effort to translate in a way which acquainted by the audiences. “Elegance” means through reproduce art and strengthen the style of the original work to attract the audiences. This paper probes into mainly the faithfulness and elegance.
4.1 The Features of Mainland
Faithfulness, elegance also embodied in the film title translation. In addition, literal translation and free translation are both the best method for reaching the faithfulness and elegance.
4.1.1 Faithfulness and Elegance
In mainland, faithfulness is one of the important standards to judge weather the translation is well. It means the translator must transmit the original content for the readers. Hamlet, even if the Chinese who do not familiar with Western literature can also through read the works, know the story outline and obtain the information: Hamlet's identity, status, events, and tragic. Therefore, literally translated as "Hamlet" is described well the content of the film and near to the theme. And the hero's image etched deeply in the hearts of readers. Therefore, the translation of the title has followed the principles of traditional translation theory. There is little imagination and modify in this. In the Title translation, this method uses so many. Most of the time is used when there are name, place and some other familiar words appear in the title. Even the title has special historical meanings. Such as "Casablanca" 《卡萨布兰卡》, "Madame Curie" 《居里夫人》 and so on.
In 1997 James Cameron was directed a film, whose English title is "Titanic". It is popular all over the world as soon as it is issued. In early 1998 “Titanic” has reached its peak level. At that time the translation of Hong Kong is《铁达尼号》. The translation of Mainland is another edition. It is translated into 《泰坦尼克号》 which till now is quite familiar with us. Although it select the method of sound translation.(It is a kind of literal translation). But compare with the two editions evidently, the mainland’s translation is more overwhelming. While Hong Kong may be due to the regional language transliteration, there translation is not so pleasant to hear and is not acceptable to mainland audiences. “Titanic” shows us splendid landscape: huge groups of people, dazzling party scenes and the turbulent seawater. So the title must be consistent with the content of the film. Once the audience heard the title of the film, they will know it is a great film.
Because of the different language culture between the English and Chinese, if one-sided emphasis to retain the form of titles, it will harm his original meaning. In a specific translation, the translators often translate film titles by adding or cutting some words instead of translate literally. In which way is not only convey the original film content but also strengthen the role of title.
