4.1 Translation Methods Based on Semantic Theory

Cao (2019) believed that theory could also describe, explain, inspire and predict the practice. “Semantic translation” requires translators to be loyal, to ensure the precise transmission of the original text. Actually, in the original text, when the semantic and syntactic structure of the target language allows, try to convey the semantic and linguistic form of the original text as accurately as possible (Newmark, 1988). Due to cultural differences, we may encounter some words with cultural characteristics in translation. In translation, we should translate with annotation, so as to accurately convey the meaning of the original text on the one hand, and provide information for the target language readers to better understand the text on the other hand. In the translation of the original text, we will encounter different translation obstacles, but how to fit the author’s ideas with the target language reader, and enable the target language reader to directly understand the source language through the translation is very important. Therefore, in the translation, we need to preserve the original meaning of the source text, such as preservation of sentence structure, preservation of metaphor and preservation of simile.

5.1 Major Gains

The translator has learned a lot from this translation practice, mainly in terms of the guiding role of semantic translation and communicative translation of the source text. 

Firstly, in translation practice, culture-loaded words are often encountered, which poses a major challenge in translation. Due to significant cultural differences between Chinese and English, when translating culturally loaded words, the translator can use annotations to explain their meaning or relate them to the source text based on their origins, in order to accurately convey the meaning of the source text. 

Secondly, in translation practice, to reflect the aesthetic effect of the expressive text and correspond with the use of semantic translation, sentence structures should be preserved under some circumstances. This not only makes the sentences fluent but also conveys the aesthetic sense expressed in the original text.
