Chapter I Introduction
1.1 The Focus of the Study
Toni Morrison(1931-2019),was born in Lorain,a Midwest town in Ohio.As a writer,a far-reachinginfluence from Morrison’s family is received by Morrison.Morrison’s father,George Wofford,is a worker.Morrison depicts that her father is impregnable and skeptical to the white people’s standpoint.White peopledeems that the blacks are vulgar,brutal and not worth considering.Morrison’s mother,Ramah WillisWofford,would more like to assess individuals according to their special behavior though she advocatesequality.As for the answering of her parents about the situation they experience,Morrison’s heart is filledwith a sense of belonging,identity,community,and then these factors are transformed into her imagination,her narration in her novels and the subversion of her cognition to the world.Growing up in this harmoniousfamily environment,Morrison is trained to be a healthy as well as an intelligent black woman.In 1949,Shewas admitted to Howard University.This black university is very famous because it has trained countlessblack talents there.Morrison also benefited a lot from this university.She joined some clubs at school toshow her talents through this platform.Besides,she also witnessed the living conditions of some blackpeople’s communities in the south.This college experience gave her a deeper understanding to racialdiscrimination.When Morrison graduated,she chose to become an English teacher at Texas SouthernUniversity.In 1958,Morrison got married to Harold Morrison,who was an architect.However,she onlyenjoyed six years of marriage life.Later,she headed for New York.She got a job as an editor at the NewYork City headquarters of Random House where she was valued and she became a senior editor.Sheplayed an important part in taking black literature into mainstream.At Princeton University,Morrisonworked for nearly 17 years.Besides,She began to teach at lots of universities in this country.
1.2 Literature Review
Tar Baby was published in 1981 as Morrison’s fourth novel and had been the best-sellers on the NewYork Times for four months and Morrison became the first African American female writer to be picturedon the cover of Newsweek.New York Times described on Tar Baby:It is a book worth reading and itsliterary value is enduring and can stand the test(Irving,1981:28-40).Tar Baby has achieved greatcommercial success,but many critics had different opinions on its research.
