A small number of early studies focused on the writing skills and characteristics of Tar Baby.In 1987,Lauren Lepow analyzed the dualism and story archetypes in the Tar Baby.He deemed that the Tar Babywas based on the myth of Eden, which fully revealed Morrison’s criticism and deconstruction of thedualism of gender, race and class.Jadine represented Morrison’s attempt to construct a pluralistic mode ofthinking. In the same year,in“Race,Gender and Desire:Narrative Strategies and the Production ofIdeology in the Fiction of Toni Cade Bambara,Toni Morrison and Alice Walker”(1989),ElliottButler-Evans studied the narrative strategies and the presentation of personas’ideology in Tar Baby.Shebelieved the novel adopts dialogue and polyphonic narration.Besides, the presentations of the protagonists,Jadine and Son,were mainly carried out through the self-expression of the characters, the third-persondescription and the description of others.
ChapterⅡEmbodiments of Black Women’s Identity Loss
2.1 Gender Identity Loss
“A woman’s whole life belongs to a man.She is subordinate to someone from birth. After being sold, she belongs to a new owner. When she grows up,because her master has spent money on her,he has theright to control her and she must obey everything he says. This is a well-known fact”(Ren,2008:112-113).It can be seen from here that women are materialized and they have the attributes of commodities.Besides, they are subordinate to the men.Men are their masters no matter whether their relationship with men ismaster and servant or husband and wife. The subjectivity of women is completely lost and they areswallowed up by patriarchal culture and colonial culture.Women have no freedom and no self.Comparedwith the white women, the black women are oppressed not only by gender, but also by race and class.During the slavery prevails, the marriages of the black slaves are not protected by law.
None of the slave laws of the colonies provides for its legitimacy. The marriage of a couple blackslaves is considered a legal marriage as long as it is approved by the slave owner. As a result, this kind ofmarriage is also extremely unstable. The black male slaves work like livestock in the plantation every day, while the black female slaves have to work in the plantation or work as maids in the homes of slave owners.they not only have to do the same heavy physical work as male slaves and endure inhuman treatment, butalso are more likely to be ravaged by the white men and suffer from both the real and spiritual world. In the1960s,the black civil rights movement, the second women’s liberation movement and the sexual liberationmovement broke out successively.Under the influence of the ideological enlightenment of thesemovements, the ideology of the black women changed.
2.2 Racial Identity Loss
Imperial relations may have been established initially by guns, guile and diseases, but they weremaintained in their interpellative phase largely by textuality, both institutionally as scholars like GauriViswanathan have shown, and informally.Similar to racism, colonialism represents the right to speak.Thecolonized express themselves through this right of speech. They are 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
