4.1 The Effects of Second Language Proficiency on NMP
The mean value of the metaphoric competence test finished by the group composed ofrelatively lower second language proficiency of English(already passed TEM-4)was22.257 and the value of another group was 24.514.According to the following tableconcerning results of Independent Samples T Test,there was significant differencesbetween the scores of the two groups(p=0.008)while the time they used actually showedno significant differences(p=0.806).
As for the scores about novel metaphor processing from the two groups,they alsoshowed some differences.For the overall test,the mean value of TEM-4 group was 42.914while the value of TEM-8 group was 78.657 and Table 4-2 was presented to reveal thedetailed information.

5.1 Major Findings
According to the findings of the independent samples T test of the two tests'scores,there were significant differences between the two groups of participants who had differentlevels of English proficiency(in the metaphoric competence test,the p-value was 0.008;inthe novel metaphor processing test,the p-value was 0.000).In both conventional andinnovative metaphor processing,students who were assigned to TEM-8 groups fared muchbetter.However,neither of them had very high mean scores on the test of metaphoricalcompetence.During the novel metaphor processing test,to be more specific,there weresignificant differences in literal,conventional metaphoric,low-conforming,and alsohigh-conforming novel metaphoric word pairs between the two groups with different levelsof English proficiency.These differences were not entirely consistent with the initialresults of the test that was designed for native speakers of English.However,the amount oftime that they spent on each component did not differ significantly from one another.Thisis one metric that may be used to test the capacity to comprehend fresh metaphors.However,such variances were shown in the part of the processing of novel metaphoricword pairs,which satisfied the hypothesis that the conventional metaphors were processedeasily and efficiently,which means that novel metaphors could have an effect.Thishypothesis was mentioned in the methodology section of the study.The amount of timethat they spent dealing with literal and conventional word pairs was not significantlydifferent at a statistically significant level.
