3.1 Translation of Culture-loaded Words

Culture-loaded terms/words are some kinds of words, phrases, and idioms signifying distinctive things in some culture. These words reflect some special ways of action, which are formed in the long course of history of a certain nation and distinctive from other nations (Liao Qiyi, 2000:23). Bao Huinan and Bao Pin (2004: 34) said in Chinese Culture and Chinese to English Translation, “culture-loaded words, namely the blank of word’s meaning, refer to that the cultural information carried by original words cannot be found in the target language”. Therefore, translation on culture-loaded words is a process of transformation of cultural information, which needs translators to precisely understand the cultural connotation of words and the cultural differences. And how to paraphrase the culture-loaded words in English properly and help English reader better understand Chinese culture have always been a hot spot to be studied in the C-E translation practice. Culture-loaded words always carry some special cultural backgrounds, which can be regarded as the problems of cultural default or cultural vacancy. Like the examples the author lists as follows, “炝辣子” and “动静”. The word “炝辣子” belongs to the cultural vacancy, and the word “动静”can be classified into cultural default. In this practice, culture-loaded words are translated by liberal translation and literal translation with annotation. 

Conclusion

Through the report based on Chinese-English translation of Reflections through Eyes, four typical problems in translation: culture-loaded word, non-subject sentences, run-on sentences in modern poetry and classical Chinese literature idioms, have been explored to some extent. These problems were the difficulties the author encountered during the translation process. And the processing of problem-solving is the thinking process in translation, during which the author had to think about the most suitable translation method and techniques for each problem under the guidance of text typology of Peter Newmark.
