4.1 At Lexical Level

The word,as a unit subordinate to the sentence and paragraph,is still a crucial part inexpressing the meaning of source text.This part is dedicated to analyzing the translation atthe lexical level in the process of translation practice,under the guidance ofcommunicative translation theory,applying techniques such as omission,annotation andconversion of part of speeches.

4.1.1 Omission

Due to the syntactic and semantic differences between English and Chinese,somenatural and indispensable parts of the expression in English may become repetitive andredundant when translated into Chinese.It is common to omit pronouns,articles,conjunctive structures and be verbs in the process of translating from English to Chinese,so that the expression of the translation is more in line with the writing habits of the targetlanguage.

Under the guidance of communication theory,the translator has completed thetranslation practice of Under the Influence by applying specific translation techniques.Thischapter is to make a general reflection on what has been learned and achieved in thetranslation practice.The deficiency of the translation task due to the translator’sincapability will also be examined.

There is a saying in Chinese,“To build a wall,you need to lay a foundation first”,which confirms the importance of translation preparation.We must understand the texttype and linguistic features of the source material to have a concrete idea of what we aregoing to translate.At the same time,translators need translation tools just as we need forksto eat,and the reasonable use of them can not only improve our translation efficiency,butalso help us avoid mistakes.However,as the saying goes,professionals do professionalwork.Apart from search engines and dictionaries,translation theory sets a standard fortranslation practice and helps translators focus on one aspect to do in-depth research.

We call translation an art because it is a process that involves creation.Chinese andEnglish come from two completely different language families,and it is very difficult toachieve complete equivalence between the languages,so it seems that creation is aninevitable thing.As the person who creates the work,the translator needs to have a basicunderstanding of the background of the source text and,if necessary,its culture.Besides,the translator’s own translation capability and understanding directly affect the quality ofthe translation,and improving this capability is not instantaneous,just like capital oftencomes from the original accumulation,in order to realize this accumulation,we need aninsightful heart,a broad vision and continuous translation practice.
