2.1 Preparations

Pre-translation preparation is a foundational step in developing ideas for translation.The translator made the following preparations for this translation practice:

The first step is to discuss the feasibility of selecting a topic for the translationmaterial with the tutor and to conduct practical research on the material once it is selected.The translator discussed the direction and theme of the topic with the tutor,and afterdetermining that the material was feasible,the translator did a general reading of the novelto understand its text type,the story it tells,its theme,and its meaning.After this,thetranslator researched the author’s information,what kind of field she specialized in,whatwere her previous works,and whether there were translations that could be used asreferences.This allowd the translator to grasp the linguistic style of the text during thesubsequent translation exercise.

The second step was to select the translation-aided tool.Considering the pastexperience of translation practice,there is bound to be cognitive bias in the products ofdifferent cultural backgrounds.Having the information search capability is a verynecessary skill,which in turn is related to the available resources at hand.So beforetranslating,the translator learned about some tools that are very helpful for thesis writingprocess through the experience of predecessors and the recommendations of students in thesame field.This laid the groundwork for situations that might be encountered later in thetranslation process,and helped the translator to be directed and purposeful in the utilizationof resources to better assist in the writing of the thesis.

2.2 Translating

After understanding the general theme of the material,the translator read the selectedchapters intensively and encountered many difficulties in translation practice.

First,the deviation of vocabulary expression.For many familiar words,what weknow are their meanings in common contexts,but in the process of creating novels,thereare many reiterpretations of these common words.Although it is possible to understand themeanings that the author intends to convey,it is a very challenging task to make thereaders understand target text while conforming to the expression of the target language.Similarly,for unfamiliar words,it is difficult to find equivalent meanings in the targetlanguage that accurately convey the message of the source text.

Second,comprehension of sentence meaning.Due to the characteristics of the treestructure of English,sentences express multi-inclusion relationships,resulting in manylong,difficult and complex sentences that are easily misunderstood.Therefore,in the firsttranslation process,the translator marked the uncertain sentences,so that these problemscould be focused in the second translation.Additionally,the article is full of Englishcolloquial expressions,and the translator’s understandings of recurring colloquialexpressions,English slangs and buzzwords do affect the coherence and readability of thetarget text.
