Introduction
1. Research Background
Considered as a landmark in Chinese American literary
history, The Woman Warrior written by Maxine Hong Kingston, a Chinese American, has caused a great sensation both in America and China. No sooner than its first publication in 1976, it became a focus of attention in the American and Chinese literary world. Consequently, the program of back-translating some well-accepted Chinese American Literature to China was launched by Professor Zhang Ziqing(张子清 ) in 1991 and the co-translators Li Jianbo and Lu Chengyi(李剑波 & 陆承毅) were pointed to translate The Woman Warrior. Subsequently, relative researches both at home and abroad concerning her and her maiden work The Woman Warrior concentrate on literary types, identity construction and cross-cultural issues through feminism, post-colonialism, hybrid and so on, and less attention has been paid to the study of its E-C translation. Just as Lefevere once claimed that translation never happened in a vacuum and it must have been influenced or manipulated by certain social ideologies and social norms(Lefevere, 1992: 58). The translation of The Woman Warrior is no exception. Due to Kingston’s specific bicultural identity, her work The Woman Warrior is pervaded with collaged, fragmented or even faked Chinese cultural elements. In face of those similar but different Chinese cultural elements, the co-translators, under the influence of the social ideologies and social norms in the 1990s, adopted various translation techniques so as to render the Chinese version a smooth reading and make it a hit in the Chinese book market. Therefore, this
thesis, by making full use of Toury’s translation norm theory, attempts to discuss and analyze the norms the Chinese translation of The Woman Warrior has complied with or violated as well as the translation strategies and methods the co-translators employed in dealing with specific cultural elements presented in the work under the influence of social ideologies and social norms.

2. Research Significance
The Woman Warrior has achieved a remarkable success in America. Before 1976, few Chinese American writers were recognized by Americans, let alone their literary works. Hovering in the American marginal literary world, they struggled to enter the mainstream field. Thanks to Kingston and her groundbreaking maiden work The Woman Warrior, a soaring number of American readers
