f thecontemporary Chinese literature enable some of his translation ideas or ways to joinin the current dominant translation norms.A research of the translation strategies of the novel reveals Goldblatt’s conformityto as well as his violation of the norms of the target culture in the translation, butoverall, he adheres to the current dominant translation norms of the contemporaryChinese literature.Specifically speaking, first, the selection of the text proves to be reasonable andnorm-conforming since the text comes from the Chinese writer Su Tong well knownin the English world and the plots, themes and languages of the story altogetherinterest the reader. Moreover, Goldblatt’s translation is fluent and expressive. Hisidentity as an English-speaking native as well as a sinologist endows him goodcommand of both English and Chinese, which gives him advantage in understandingthe original text as well as working out a translation of readability and acceptabilityby obeying the linguistic and cultural norms of the target culture. However, thedemands of the expectancy norms concerning literary translation, which requires thereproduction of the literariness of the original and the translation mission of culturalcommunication at the same time calls for some violations of linguistic norms or thecultural norms of the target culture, especially when it comes to some particular partsthat are characteristics of the author’s writing style. Nevertheless, thenegative impact does exist and some controversies have been already aroused. It isuncertain but possible that such kind of criticism would lead to Goldblatt’smodification of translation strategies in the future. This uncertainty is also theinsufficiency of the thesis since it does not provide sufficient evidence to indicatewhat the future changes would be resulted in. Nonetheless, the research on thereception and readers’ comments on the translation of Wo De Diwang Shengya doesshow that the appropriate reproduction of the literariness in literary translation is vitalfor the reading of a literary work, both for the common readers as well as for theprofessional readers and that failing to preserve the literariness of the novel wouldresult in criticism and negative influence on the reception of the translated work..In a word, the successful reception of a Chinese fiction in the western culturerequires first, the selection of the original text that will interest the target readers andstrike a chord in their heart. Secondly the translation must possess the quality ofacceptability which asks the conformity of the translation to the linguistic as well ascultural norms to a c
