In this thesis, the author attemptsto find an efficient way which can be used by Chinese translators to avoidChinglish.

0.1 Background of Research

This principle is followed by manytranslation agencies for international institutions such as United Nationsand European Union. This, however, is not the case with C-E translation.Xu Meijiang (徐梅江 2004)，a senior translator in China's CentralTranslation Bureau, states that although there are some qualified nativeEnglish-speaking translators are engaged in C-E translation, most of C-Etranslations are done by Chinese translators alone. This is because, on theone hand, Chinese is a very difficult language to learn, and nativeEnglish-speaker who is qualified to do C-E translation are few; on the other hand, the expenses of hiring a native English-speaking translator aremuch higher than those of their Chinese counterpart. We can not changethe situation in the near future, therefore the only choice remain for us isto find efficient means to help improve quality of C-E translation, inparticular, to avoid Chinglish, for according to Wang Longsheng (王弄笛2000), "Chinglish is the main cause of poor quality in C-E translationdone by Chinese translators".In present-day China, Chinglish is pervasive and has drawn moreand more attention from Chinese as well as foreigners.Some Chinese people contend that Chinglish deserves a place in the global language family, and its existence is justified by Indian English, American English, and Australian English. In a questionnaire，72.2% of 8536 Chinese netizens endorse the use of Chinglish.
Others, however, are ashamed of Chinglish, considering it as a proof of the careless and irresponsible working attitude of Chinese peopie. Some actually exclaim that hearing Chinglish is like receivinga lightning strike, Foreigners' opinions are no less diversified. Gene Richards, anAmerican, is quoted saying, "It (Chinglish) is funny and deserves to belaughed at and criticized." James Fallows, thechief speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, writes, "I have to admit, screwed-up It is undeniable that Chinglish, a hybrid of English and Chinese, islaughter-provoking, interesting, or even poetic, as some foreigners haveremarked.
