In accordance with this general goal, the author of this thesistries to analyze the process of translating legal terms under the theoretical frameworkof Fillmore’s frame semantics, so as to recommend some translation strategies to helplegal translators better choose translation strategies in their translation practice. In hispaper published in 1982, Frame Semantics, Fillmore examined a number ofobservations about lexical meaning or text interpretation which permit formulations interms of notions from frame semantics, also he analyzed the meanings of legal termssuch as “guilty/ innocent”, “murder”, “forcible entry”, “oral agreement” from a framesemantics point of view.The basic idea of frame semantics is that one cannot understand the meaning ofa single word without access to all the essential knowledge that relates to that word.Frame semantics offers a particular way of looking at word meaning: trying tounderstand why a speech community constructs a category and uses specific words toexpress it; meanwhile through presenting and clarifying the reasons, to explain themeaning of this word. All the categories are constructed on the basis of the activationsituation which depends on the knowledge and experiences gained in everyday life.Thus, in frame semantics, word meaning is characterized in terms of experience-basedschematizations of the speaker’s world, that is to say, a word is defined in relation toits background frame, emphasizing the continuities between language and experience.In a word, translation study under frame semantics integrates those elements thataffect word meanings, including textual factors and non-textual factors. The authoraims to use frame semantics theory to get a comprehensive understanding andanalysis on legal terminology, thereupon proposes effective strategies in translatinglegal terms.

　　As a result of the increasing demand for global cooperation, legal translation isgradually involved in many aspects of our lives, in terms of macro level and microlevel, or legal practice of legislation, judicial work and law enforcement, all is relatedto the development and realization of democratic rights of human beings, we can saythat law is everywhere around our life , in this sense, it is of great necessity andsignificance to conduct research on the legal systems and cultures of westerncountries and China which, to some extent, indicates that the present study has boththeoretical and practical significance. Among the previous studies, much has beencarried on from the perspective of semiotics, cross-culture, comparative law andpragmatics. However, it seems that little of the application of frame semantics theoryin legal translation between English and Chinese has ever been touched upon. Framesemantics offers a particular way of looking at word meanings, that is, word meaningis characterized in terms of experience-based schematizations of the speaker’s world,emphasizing the continuities, rather than the discontinuities, between language andexperience. Kussmaul(1994) held the idea that Fillmore’s theory’s advance was in thatthe interaction between the prototypical meaning potential and the communicationenvironment had been given sufficient consideration.
