Chapter Four Case Analysis

4.1 Comprehension

Comprehension goes beyond a mere surface-level understanding of the text.Notonly should interpreters focus on the overall content of the original text,but theyshould also process the embedded information.The translator/interpreter formulates(mentally)a Meaning Hypothesis for the text segment s/he is processing as aTranslation/Interpreting Unity,i.e.s/he temporarily assigns a meaning to it.To do this,s/he relies on knowledge of the source language,but also on the relevant part ofhis/her World Knowledge(Gile,147).Alongside with the linguistic meaning of thediscourse,it can be done to infiltrate and limit the semantics,and remove its polysemyand ambiguity.

4.1.1 Making Implication Explicit

“The lexical structure of a language,its stock of words and expressions and itsestablished patterns of collocation,provides its speakers with ready-made ways ofanalyzing and reporting experience”(Baker,82).However,English and Chinese can besaid to be at opposite poles in terms of ideographic forms.Chinese tends to be implicit,vague and covert.So interpreters need to deliver the implicit original meanings accuratelyand faithfully when interpreting into English.

Chapter Five Conclusion

In this practice,the interpreter made full preparation in advance,applied interpretingskills appropriately to solve problems at the site,and carried out targeted reflection afterthe interpreting.The interpreting task at Shandong Design and Art Fair has been completedexcellently.

From this task,the interpreter has learned that the Interpretive Theory provides a solidtheoretical orientation and extensive practical instruction information for interpreting.Under its guidance,the interpreter has improved both the efficiency and quality ofinterpreting and the ability to integrate information and organize language,and gained amore comprehensive understanding of interpreting theories.This is not only reflected inthe pre-interpreting preparation and post-task feedback as mentioned above,but also in theevaluation of interpreting quality.

Although the interpreter received positive feedback and comments after the task,shethought that there was still much progress to be made for improvement in the quality of herinterpreting and integrity of interpreting theories and practice.
