In early May 2023,the author undertook this consecutive interpreting task in thehome design exhibition area of Shandong Design and Art Fair.After accepting theinvitation,she asked the organizer about the fair,and learned that the proposed visitor wasa furniture designer from the United States.Since she spoke standard English,there wouldbe no accent problems in the communication process,which relieved the pressure ofinterpreting.In order to prepare well,the interpreter also had a discussion with theexhibition planner about the basic information of the exhibition object,and got part of theintroduction materials.With his assistance,the interpreter was able to make targetedpreparations before the visit.

2.2 On-site Interpreting

In this exhibition,the interpreter accompanied Stella to visit the whole exhibition.Atthe starting,the speaker Xiaojing expressed welcome to the foreign friend,and describedthe background and characteristics of the exhibition.Then she introduced the areas of theexhibits one by one in order,and communicated with Stella on the design concepts andcharacteristics of the home products,which involved relevant knowledge of ancientChinese architecture,standards and norms of furniture design industry,Chinese classicalpoetry and folk culture.

Under the instruction of the Interpretive Theory,the interpreter adapted interpretingskills of omission,amplification,reorganization and so on according to the contents of theexhibition,in an effort to deliver the meaning of the speaker.During the visiting process,the surroundings were noisy,so the interpreter stayed close to the speaker and visitor tolisten carefully to what they said.

In practice,the interpreter encountered the following difficulties.In order to controlthe progress of the visit,Xiaojing spoke very fast to completely introduce the exhibition.Although the interpreter had reached agreement with her on speed and pause of the speechbefore the exhibition began,the interpreter still felt that in the interpreting practice,shetalked too fast and some sentences were too lengthy and full of information.
