2.2.1 Studies on Teacher’s Nonverbal Behaviors Abroad

After reading,sorting out,and summarizing the research and literature onteachers’nonverbal behaviors related to abroad,this study will summarize thefollowing aspects:the historical overview of nonverbal behavior research,theimportance of teachers’nonverbal behaviors,the influence of nonverbal behavior onteaching,and the training research on teachers’nonverbal behaviors.

(1)The historical overview of nonverbal behavior research

Research on nonverbal behaviors started in modern times.Darwin first pointedout in his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals in 1872 thathumans would use facial expressions to express their emotions,which attractedpeople’s attention.Meanwhile,this book lays the foundation for the study ofnonverbal behavior.The anthropologist E.Sapir was the first to propose the conceptof nonverbal behavior.Through searching and combing relevant foreign literature,this study divided foreign studies on teachers’nonverbal behaviors into the followingperiods:

In the 1950s and 1960s,scholars mainly studied the theory of nonverbal behaviorand made breakthrough progress.American scholar BirdWhistell’s(1952)Introduction to Kinesics and Hall’s(1990)The Silent Language had a great influence,particularly noteworthy was the release of Introduction to Kinesics,which signifiedthe systematic study of nonverbal behaviors.Birdwhistell broke down human bodymovements by recording and analyzing a series of indissoluble body movements.Itwas the first time to propose the word“Kinesics”and the theory of kinesics.Hallexplained the role of cultural factors in nonverbal communication by using spatiallinguistics to represent nonverbal behavior.
