Chapter 1 Task Description
1.1 Background of the Task
The translation material of this report is from the 20-chapter book Adolescence in India published by Springer Singapore Press in March 2022. There has been no Chinese version of the book since its publication. The writer selected Chapter 7 “Aggression and Violence Among Adolescents and Youth” for translation. The translation material is about 10,000 words in English and its translation is about 18,000 characters.
Swati Patra, Ph.D. in Psychology, is a Professor of Psychology in the School of Social Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. She has earlier worked in National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Swart has actively engaged in teaching, researching and training of psychology in the fields of mental health and well-being, emotional intelligence, positive psychology, mindfulness, parenting, and child and adolescent psychology. The Adolescence in India is devoted to researching the mental health issues that Indian adolescents face.
The book provides a thorough, in-depth and practical approach to understanding challenges facing Indian adolescents. There are three parts in the book. The first part explains the concept of adolescence in the Indian context and discusses their personality development and relationships with peers. The second part covers the issues associated with adolescent depression, suicide, violence, substance use and addictive behaviors in the socio-cultural context of India with a focus on concerns for adolescents with disabilities. The final part provides readers with preventive strategies to address challenges and promote healthy adolescent development, both at the individual and group levels. The book can play a certain role in adolescents’ education, mental health, development, and so on.
1.2 Text Type and Language Features
The source text of the translation is a theoretically psychological work, which belongs to the informative text. In A Textbook of Translation, Peter Newmark categorizes texts into three types based on the function of language: expressive text, informative text, and vocative text. The expressive text, such as literary works, are more subjective and centered on the author’s expression. The informative text is more objective because it is based on facts rather than language. Its emphasis is on the objective information expressed in language, such as reports on science and technology. The vocative text is also people-oriented, however, unlike the expressive text, it is reader-centered. Like advertisements and political propaganda, the vocative text aims to influence readers, especially their emotions and behaviors. In the source text, the author cites a large number of psychological theories and analyzes relevant knowledge of adolescent violence and aggression with examples, to make readers understand the seriousness of adolescent violent aggression and take targeted measures to solve it. This book is a theoretical psychological work that places a focus on information delivery. Therefore, according to Newmark’s classification of text, this text is classified as an informative text.
